Sheridan has a proud history of supporting the arts, and this tradition continues at Sheridan College with a renewed emphasis of choral music. With the addition of Dr. Robert Psurny, a new faculty member specializing in choral and vocal music, the choral offerings at Sheridan College are expanding.
While the college currently offers two choirs, there will be additional choral concerts given this spring by a new professional choir in residence, and also by a visiting ensemble on the Whitney Center for the Arts Concert Series.
The new choir in residence is Skyline Singers, a collaboration of professional singers from Wyoming and Montana. The group specializes in all types of a cappella or unaccompanied music: from medieval plainsong to madrigals, motets, contemporary choral works and the latest vocal jazz and pop styles. They will be performing one concert each semester at the Whitney Center for the Arts on the Sheridan College campus, and their first concert is set for Jan. 26, 2019.
Fans of choral music will also have the extraordinary chance to hear the professional male-voice ensemble Cantus in concert at the Whitney Center for the Arts on Feb. 2, 2019. Based in Minneapolis, Cantus has been prioritizing concerts and educational outreach for more than 20 years. In addition to regularly commissioning new choral works, they have an impressive catalog of professional recordings and have won numerous awards.
The Sheridan College Choral ensembles are the Collegiate Chorale and the Chamber choir. Comprised of community members as well as Sheridan College faculty, staff and students, the Collegiate Chorale performs a wide variety of choral selections. This group is open to all singers, and no audition is required. If you enjoy singing choral music with others ranging from teenagers to those in their nineties, consider joining us. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. and the first rehearsal for spring 2019 will be Jan. 29.
The Sheridan College Chamber Choir is an ensemble for Sheridan College students, and it is open by audition. These two ensembles will give their next major concert April 30, 2019.
