XC boys earn regional champs title

SHERIDAN — Sheridan boys cross-country runners earned first place as a team at the Regional meet Friday, taking them strongly into state competition slated for Oct. 20 in Sheridan.

The runners scored a combined 34 points, leading second place Cheyenne Central, who earned 42 points, and third place Cheyenne East, who tallied 83 points.

Sheridan’s Alex Garber finished third overall with a time of 17 minutes, 23 seconds, just 20 seconds ahead of teammates Garett Avery, who finished sixth place with a time of 17:43, and Timothy Brown, who took seventh with an identical time.

“The first-place finish by the SHS boys team was very impressive,” head coach Art Baures said. “This is the first time in at least the last 25 years that Sheridan High School has won a conference in cross-country.”

The top five boys earned all-conference honors, and Katie Turpin and Kate Moran earned all-conference honors for the girls.

Turpin finished third with a time of 20:19 and Moran followed in sixth in 20:36.

“The varsity girls had a very good showing by finishing a mere four points behind the conference champion, Cheyenne Central,” Baures said.

Sheridan will host the state meet at the Sheridan Veterans Affairs Medical Center next Saturday.
