UCROSS — Award-winning author, journalist and three-time Ucross resident Suki Kim will speak at the University of Wyoming Oct. 11.

Kim is the only writer ever to have lived undercover in North Korea for immersive journalism, documented in her bestselling nonfiction book “Without You, There Is No Us: Undercover Among the Sons of North Korea’s Elite.” Her first novel, “The Interpreter,” won the PEN Open Book Award and was a runner up for the PEN/Hemingway Award. The title of Kim’s talk is “Undercover in North Korea.” A highly anticipated article by Kim will appear in the November issue of The New Republic.

The event, co-presented by Ucross and University of Wyoming, will take place from 6-7 p.m. in Room 170 of the College of Law Building. The talk is open to the general public at no charge and light refreshments will be provided. Copies of Kim’s book will be available for purchase and signing immediately following her talk. University of Wyoming partners in the Oct. 11 event are the MFA Creative Writing Program and the School of Culture, Gender and Social Justice.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to discuss my time undercover in North Korea at the University of Wyoming,” Kim said. “I’m wrapping up my third stay at the Ucross Foundation, so the High Plains have practically become a second home for me — and definitely one of my favorite places to write.”

Kim’s first Ucross residency was in 1998, and her second was in 2005 through Ucross’ partnership with the PEN Hemingway Award for Debut Fiction. Ucross has partnered with the PEN/Hemingway Award — founded by Mary Hemingway, wife of Ernest Hemingway — since 1995, and invites the award winner, two finalists and two honorable mentions for one-month residencies at Ucross.

Kim’s articles and essays appear regularly in The New York Times, Washington Post, Harper’s magazine and The New Republic, where she is a contributing editor. She has been featured around the world and her TED Talk has drawn millions of viewers. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship in fiction, a George Soros’s Open Society and Fulbright Fellowship in nonfiction, and a Ferris Fellowship in journalism at Princeton University.

She is a 2019 New America Fellow, and her essay on fear appears in Best American Essays 2018.

The “Explore Hemingway” series is sponsored by a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant: “Creating Humanities Communities along Wyoming’s Hemingway Highway,” a multi-year initiative that explores Hemingway’s continuing relevance, both in contemporary literature and as an icon. The grant was awarded to Sheridan College in partnership with the Wyoming Humanities Council, Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research and Ucross.

Other 2018 “Explore Hemingway” events include public talks by PEN/Hemingway Award honorees and Ucross Fellows Yaa Gyasi, Kevin Powers, and Sigrid Nunez, along with writer, editor and teacher Darla Worden. Other events have included a fundraiser at the Sheridan Inn featuring Phil Greene, author of To Have and Have Another: A Hemingway Cocktail Companion, and a Hemingway-themed Saturday U at Sheridan College. The Hemingway Society will host its 19th biennial international conference in Wyoming and Montana.
