SHS CC competes in Helena
SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School cross-country team took its talents north to Montana for the Helena 7-on-7 cross-country race Thursday. The Lady Broncs placed fourth with 46 points, while the Broncs finished ninth, tallying 80 points.
The unique format featured seven separate races. The first race encompassed each team’s seventh fastest runner — the final spot on the varsity squad — on both the boys and girls teams. The second race had each team’s No. 6 runner, both boys and girls, compete against one another and so on.
Kate Turpin paced the Lady Broncs, clocking in with a time of 19 minutes, 26 seconds, which placed her seventh out of 33 runners. Kate Moran and Sarah Gonda each crossed seventh in their races, logging times of 20:24 and 20:43, respectively.
“All of the girls had their best times or nearly so in their respective races,” Sheridan head coach Art Baures said.
“It’s amazing to think that they have come so far in such a short period of time.”
Alex Garber led the Broncs with a time of 17:18, which was good enough for 20th in a field of 36. Garrett Avery finished 17th in his race with a time of 17:21, and David Standish crossed eighth in his race, recording a time of 17:22.
“The meet was highly competitive, and the boys, once again, showed a solid finish,” Baures said. “The highlight of the meet was the fact that our top five all ran within 40 seconds of each other despite the fact that they weren’t in the same races together.”
Sheridan travels to Gillette for its conference meet next week.
