SHERIDAN — Sheridan County Sportsmen’s Association treasurer Bill Heitler presented Wyoming Game and Fish Department Sheridan wildlife biologist Tim Thomas with a $5,000 donation Aug. 9 that will be used for two ongoing wildlife research projects in the Bighorn Mountains.

The majority of the donation, $4,500, will be used to purchase three GPS telemetry collars for elk. The collars will collect data for a research project studying the movement of elk in the Bighorn Mountains.

The project was initiated in 2016 in response to elk that tested positive to exposure to brucellosis. Identifying movement patterns of elk will help wildlife managers better understand how a disease like brucellosis could move through the population. The remaining $500 is designated for the current moose study that is collecting data on seasonal habitat use, moose survival and population dynamics.
