HOW I VOTED: Broncs battle at top of polls

SHERIDAN — Wednesday and Thursday marked the release of the high school boys and girls basketball rankings, voted on by media members and coaches. Even though Sheridan suffered a loss, the Broncs retained their spot atop the boys rankings.

The Broncs suffered their first conference loss of the season Saturday at Cheyenne Central, but every team in the top three suffered a loss, as well. As a result, my rankings saw very little fluctuation.

My top four teams remained in their respective position. However, in the final rankings, Evanston leapfrogged Campbell County for the No. 3 spot. I voted Rock Springs as the fifth and final team in my rankings, and the majority of voters elected to reward Central for toppling Sheridan and gave the final spot to the Indians.

The top of my girls rankings stayed the same, but my fellow voters didn’t agree. Campbell County logged two lopsided victories over Central and Cheyenne East and jumped Thunder Basin. The wins, while impressive in the nature in which they occurred, didn’t urge me to rank the Lady Camels ahead of Thunder Basin. The Lady Bolts didn’t do anything to hurt their case as they stretched their win streak to six games.

I vaulted Kelly Walsh from No. 4 to No. 2 and the Lady Trojans ended up settling into the No. 3 slot with the majority vote. Kelly Walsh picked up a nice road win over Evanston, so those two teams traded places in my rankings. East remains as a tough team to figure out. The Lady Thunderbirds got thumped by Campbell County, so I dropped them to No. 5; they ended up sliding into the fourth spot in the wyopreps poll.
