DAYTON — Sheridan County School District 1 schools located in the Tongue River Valley initiated protective measures after the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting in Dayton shortly after 7 a.m. Monday.

SCSO reported that several local residents became aware of the incident, believing it to be a homicide, which was not the case.

“We spoke with the residents, school personnel and government representatives in the area to explain the overwhelming evidence pointed to a suicide and there was no threat to the community,” Sheriff Allen Thompson wrote in an email to The Sheridan Press.

The investigation proceeded through the morning and all indications indicated the incident was a suicide.

Thompson said SCSO typically does not release information regarding suicides, but wanted to share the facts of the situation as rumors continued more than 12 hours after the incident. SCSO did not release the victim’s name or details due to the sensitive nature of the incident and out of respect for the family.
