Academics for All is proud to honor Lucy La Rosa, the daughter of Christopher and Laura La Rosa, with this week’s Summit Award.

La Rosa maintains a 3.94 GPA in a difficult schedule that includes challenging college prep courses, such as Advanced Placement psychology, AP biology, AP French, AP government, AP Spanish, AP British literature, AP United States history, AP calculus and gifted and talented courses.
La Rosa’s favorite subject is AP British literature and said Sheridan High School English teacher Jeanne Hackman is an outstanding teacher.

She describes Hackman as “very focused and dedicated” and that she “coaches hard, but far.”
La Rosa credits Hackman for helping make her writing “clearer and better argued.” La Rosa’s improvement was noticed under Hackman’s watch.

Hackman also noted that “Lucy has a natural curiosity in all situations and looks for opportunities which challenge her thinking.”

La Rosa’s accomplishments extend beyond the classroom. During her high school career, La Rosa has balanced work (she currently works at Sanfords), volleyball and music (while she no longer takes lessons, La Rosa occasionally practices the violin).

She has also represented Sheridan at Wyoming Girls State and has participated in Junior City Council. However, La Rosa’s true passion is writing. Sheridan High School English teacher Mike Clift feels that “perhaps her [La Rosa] best attribute as a literature student is that she is genuinely and deeply curious.”
As such, it is not surprising that La Rosa has been drawn to journalism. La Rosa is currently the features editor for the Ock, Sheridan High School’s student newspaper. While the Ock has reduced their print output to six issues this year, the paper started publishing content online this year. Ultimately, the Ock is producing more output this year than in previous years and La Rosa is responsible for reviewing much of the Ock’s content.

La Rosa has designed her high school curriculum to help her pursue her interest in journalism at college and beyond. La Rosa, who was born in Milan and loves speaking different languages and traveling, hopes to pursue both by pursuing a career in international relations journalism.

La Rosa is currently considering The University of Chicago, The University of Central Florida, and Michigan State due to their study abroad programs.

While in college, La Rosa hopes to spend a year abroad in Italy, Spain or France.
