SHERIDAN — Even though snow continues to cover the ground, local lodging establishments are feeling the heat of summer.
Hotels and motels in the Sheridan area are filling up fast for this summer’s biggest events, and many are already filled to capacity during select weekends.
Popular weekends already booked for many lodging facilities include the weekend of the Bighorn Country USA concerts June 18-20. At least four hotels in the area are fully booked during those dates, and two others said they are nearing capacity.
Another event bringing visitors to town in droves is the Big Horn Mountain Wild and Scenic Trail Run in Dayton. The run takes place the same weekend as the concert, making empty rooms during that time period a rare find.
May is also reportedly a busy month for those in Sheridan’s lodging industry and this year is no exception. The annual Snickers Big Horn Soccer Cup typically brings in more than 1,000 participants, many of whom are from outside the area. One hotel is entirely booked May 7-9 to hold many of the competitors and their families. Other hotels expect full rooms as they get closer to those dates.
Some of the Sheridan Best Western’s rooms were reserved for the soccer tournament as early as November and December, sales manager Renee Harned said.
Events like the Sheridan-WYO-Rodeo, held July 5-12, tend to be busy for lodging establishments as well. The Best Western had two dates during the rodeo week entirely booked off, but still had rooms available for a majority of the week.
“In these peak seasons, we always suggest people book in advance,” Harned said.
Ken Johnson at America’s Best Value Inn in Sheridan agreed. He said those looking for a room are typically safe booking one month out. However, given all of the events occurring around the same time over the summer, he recommends people book at least six months before the desired day to guarantee a room.
So far, Johnson said his hotel is only booked out for the concerts during the third week of June, but he also anticipates rooms to fill quickly for dates in May and July.
“As we get closer to those dates — that time — May will usually book up fast,” he said. “But so far, it’s not that bad.”
For the Mill Inn, available weekend rooms in May, June and July are becoming fewer and further between.
A representative of the Mill Inn stated travelers need to jump on rooms now while they’re still available.
