SHERIDAN — Cloud Peak Energy announced this morning there was a fatality at its Spring Creek Mine, which is located approximately 35 miles north of Sheridan. A press release from CPE indicates a single haul truck incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. yesterday.
Big Horn County Coroner Terry Bullis indicated the person was from Sheridan. The name of the deceased is expected to be released this afternoon.
Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Amy Louviere said Tuesday that the 230-ton truck crashed through a berm at about 7:30 p.m. Monday, killing the driver.
Cloud Peak says the victim’s family has been notified.
Federal mine safety officials were on the scene. No other details were immediately available.
Spring Creek employs about 280 people and produced more than 17 million tons of coal in 2013.
The last reported fatality at the mine was in 2006.
