SHERIDAN — The Wyoming Department of Transportation temporarily closed Interstate 90 between Buffalo and Gillette both east and westbound lanes last night.

The road was closed around 9:40 p.m. due to flash flooding at mile post 91 near Dead Horse Creek following a heavy rain storm that produced 8-10 inches of hail in the area, WYDOT reported.

WYDOT maintenance crews were on scene and assessing damages until shortly after 8 a.m. when the interstate was reopened as the water receded enough that it was deemed safe for the traveling public.

District 4 Public Relations Specialist Ronda Holwell advised there is still water present at mile post 91 and drivers should proceed with caution. The same rain storm closed US 14/16 between Ucross and Gillette.

WYDOT has a construction project near Spotted Horse and the road surface has been torn up and could not handle that much rain.

Conditions on the construction area forced WYDOT to close this section of highway.  Construction crews are working in the project area and as soon as they get it passable they will reopen the road to the traveling public, which is expected to happen by early afternoon today.
