SHERIDAN — A Sheridan Police Department officer responded to a report of a vehicle collision with a deer on Coffeen Avenue across from Ridley’s Tuesday morning.
No citations were issued and Wyoming Game and Fish Department authorized the deer be killed by the officer, according to SPD incident reports.
The deer’s back legs were broken and the officer fired five shots to dispatch it, all of which connected with the deer, but it did not die immediately from the first shots, SPD Lt. Travis Koltiska said.
Any hunter understands that not every shot fired into a deer kills it immediately, he said.
It was an unfortunate situation, Koltiska said, but the officer was attempting to end the deer’s suffering.
It is always dangerous to fire a weapon in city limits and the officer was cognizant of that during the situation, Koltiska said.
