SHERIDAN — Sheridan College hosted an author talk and book signing in coordination with Ucross at the Whitney Center for the Arts Thursday.

The “Explore Hemingway” event featured three nationally-known authors whose works were finalists for the PEN/Hemingway award: Elissa Schappell, Ian Bassingthwaighte and Ling Ma.

Students, artists and teachers attended the event to hear a reading from each of the author’s PEN/Hemingway award-nominated works and ask questions about their writing processes.

Sarah Heuck Sinclair moderated the evening. Each author’s work was semi-autobiographical, so each shared a bit of their own story that led to creating characters and overall theme.

Schappell read from her novel “Use Me,” Bassingthwaighte read from “Live from Cairo,” and Ma read from “Severance.”

Sinclair prompted the authors to share their perspective on social media — from Ma who finds it to be distracting, Bassingthwaighte who says social media usage depends on personality and Schappell who likes to use social media platforms to engage with people.
