SHERIDAN — While the Troopers have been up and down through the young 2013 season, one thing has been consistent.
Drew Adriaens’ pitching.
The on-loan MSU-B pitcher has helped the Troop to a 2-0 conference mark after a 5-3 win in Gillette Tuesday night over their fellow League AA opponent, the Roughriders.
Trailing 3-0 entering the ninth inning, the Troopers plated five runs to get the win They lost two Sunday in Wheatland.
Tuesday, Adriaens fanned 15, one-upping his earlier League AA win over Cheyenne Post 6 in May when he waved 11 batters.
Surprisingly, Gillette pitcher Wyatt Eastabrook outdid that feat on the mound as he dominated the Troopers line-up, going 8 and 2/3 innings and striking out 21 batters.
But, in the ninth, the Troop overpowered reliever Ian Durgin with three RBIs from Kaul Eisele and two more from Skyler Holwell, finally putting bats on the ball to break their scoreless game.
With one out, Kevin Bakkehaug and Tony Mort each reached on errors, Connor McCafferty singled and Skyler Holwell doubled to right to plate two. Eisele sent another double to right, clearing the bases. Though they struck out 22 times, Sheridan (2-0, 8-5) managed four hits, holding Gillette (0-1, 15-16) to one.
Adriaens allowed the on hit in his seven stellar innings of work, walking only two. Holwell came on in relief to secure the final six outs, not allowing a hit and striking out two.
Sheridan gets a rematch with the Roughriders next Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Sheridan at Thorne-Rider Stadium.
