SHERIDAN — Back in May, the Sheridan County School District 1 board of trustees voted unanimously to add activities to the schools in the district.

For high school athletics, this meant additions of dance teams, cross country, indoor track and soccer.

For the schools, this meant finding new coaches.

Tongue River High School recently named Tim Maze to coach the school’s new cross country team.

Maze has plenty of experience coaching, specifically in the Tongue River system. He was the head track coach at the high school from 1989-2002 and has been the coach at the middle school since 2010. He has been involved with the high school and middle school track program every year since 1987 as either an assistant or a head coach.

Described by the Wyoming Department of Education as a “teacher that students seem to flock to,” the Tongue River Middle School science teacher was named Sheridan County District 1 Teacher of the Year in 2013. This, Tongue River Athletic Director John Scott says, was very important in selecting him to lead the new cross country program.

“He brings a wealth of experience to the new program,” Scott said. “Coach Maze develops great relationships with his students and athletes. This will go a long way in building our cross country program.”

The Tongue River cross country team will begin its first season on Aug. 29, at the Buffalo Invite.
