NOTE: A hiccup in the results  from Thursday’s meet resulted in times being off for events 7-12, and this came across in the first version emailed to the media. Because of this, much of the story in Friday’s print edition was incorrect as well.  Story updated to include that the only 4A state qualifier from Thursday for Sheridan was Presley Felker in the 400-meter freestyle. Apologies for the confusion.

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan boys swim team held their first home meet Thursday afternoon, racking up one individual state qualifier.

Their opponent Gillette, in typical Camels’ fashion, won 11 of 12 events Thursday on the way to a 123-53 victory, but there were bright spots for a young Broncs team working to grow after returning only two state qualifiers from last year’s team.

Sophomore Presley Felker won Sheridan’s only event, swimming a 4-minute 50.13-second 4A state qualifying 400-meter freestyle race.

“Presley was probably our best one (today),” head coach Brent Moore said. “He wasn’t even close to qualifying and he qualified by eight seconds. He had been close but still eight seconds away, so that was huge for him.

“And then the rest of the guys; we had tons of time drops,” he added. “We swam real tough against a tough school and some challenges.”

Sophomore Jakob Eckard was second in the 100-meter butterfly (1:12.11), less than a second off the 4A qualifying time, and he finished three-tenths of a second behind winner Gillette’s Taylor Knottnerus in the boys 50-meter freestyle.

Sheridan, still with a small squad, doesn’t have a diver and five Camel divers competed against each other Thursday with Tyler Klamm scoring 200.95 for first.

Besides giving up points in an entire event without a competitor, the Broncs are finding benchmarks along the way as they head to another tough meet Friday at Laramie. And along with Felker winning the one event, Sheridan swam multiple freshman and sophomores Thursday who finished with good times.

“They’re getting better,” Moore said of the team’s overall progress. “We’ve got a long way to go but I think we’re headed in the right direction.”
