SHERIDAN — Sheridan High School Bronc wrestlers trekked more than 300 miles to Philip, S.D., Friday, to pull some fast pins in rounds one and two, placing both varsity and junior varsity squads at strong positions in a regional tournament. Six wrestlers head into semifinal rounds Saturday, and three earned positions in wrestlebacks.

“A lot of points can be had tomorrow if we can get guys into finals and get them into wrestle backs for third,” head coach Tyson Shatto said.

Varsity wrestlers were at fifth with a team score of 85.5, and junior varsity wrestlers were placed at 14th with a team score of 31.5 after Friday’s rounds. The tournament includes more than 30 varsity and JV teams from Wyoming and South Dakota. Rapid City Central was sitting at first in team standings with 118.5 points.

“There’s been a lot of excitement. It’s hard to single out just one. The key to our success is to wrestle the way we know how to wrestle and look to score points,” Shatto said. “We do that, and we’ll be fine, but we have tough competition and we have to step up and move forward.”

Braxton Cooper won both his rounds Friday to make it to the semis at 113 pounds. Cody Delk (180 pounds), Gage Tyree (126 pounds) and Tucker Goss (120 pounds) each took both their Friday rounds, as well, moving into the semis today.

Hayden Hastings won three rounds Friday, taking a decision 2-0 on his third round. Dominic Miller, at 113 pounds on JV, also advanced to the semis, winning his two Friday rounds.

Jacob Hallam, at 160 pounds, lost one and won two rounds to make his way into wrestlebacks today. Dane Chambers had a pin in 24 seconds on his first round before losing one and winning one to advance to wrestlebacks.

Heavyweight Ed Arzy also advanced to wrestlebacks today with a win and a loss. The SHS Wrestlers will head into a dual with Kelly Walsh in Casper Thursday.
