SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Broncs and Lady Broncs swept Riverton for the second time this season as they came out of their holiday break Thursday.
At Riverton, the Lady Broncs opened with a 47-31 victory over the Lady Wolverines, overcoming a slow tempo that forced them to play outside their comfort zone of fast-paced transition basketball. While the margin was as small as eight points in the second half, a Riverton technical foul with four minutes to go vaulted Sheridan to 7-1 with the victory. The Lady Broncs were scheduled to play Kelly Walsh today at 1:30 p.m.
For the Broncs, they led 27-25 at halftime, holding on for the 54-51 win in a lower-scoring affair than they have become accustomed to.
The Wolverines added another key starting player from the last time they played Sheridan, a 77-66 Broncs win, and home court advantage proved a difference maker, but the Broncs were able to push their record to 7-1 as well.
“I knew they would be tougher,” head coach Gale Smith said. “We didn’t shoot very well on the outside, turned the ball over in transition a few times late, but it was a gutsy win on the road against an improving win.”
He added that they got good minutes from kids off the bench.
Reed Ritterbusch scored 27, Dylan Daniels and Tyler Kaufmann each scored eight and Judson White added seven.
The Broncs hit big shots down the stretch Smith added several, going 20-23 from the free throw line on the night.
Sheridan gets perhaps its toughest test of the season when they play Kelly Walsh at 3 p.m. today. The Trojans handed Cheyenne East (9-1) their first loss of the year in convincing fashion Thursday in Riverton, holding the Thunderbirds to just 11 points in the entire first half on the way to a 51-34 win.
“I hope it’s a dogfight, because that means we’re in the game,” Smith said.
