SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School Volleyball team was eliminated at the 4A East Regional Tournament in Cheyenne Friday. The team lost to Cheyenne East at 11 a.m. (25-14, 25-22, and 25-12). The team turned around to play Laramie and lost those matches as well. Their final scores for the games against Laramie were 25-18, 25-20 and 25-12.
The team’s elimination from the tournament ends the season for Sheridan’s Lady Broncs. This is the second year the team has not qualified for the state tournament.
Over in Wright at the 2A East Regional Tournament, Tongue River beat out Burns. End scores for each match were 21-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22 and 15-12.
“In their match against Burns, they played really well,” coach Michelle Nielsen said. “Their defense was on. They moved, they played together, they were very united as one team. You couldn’t stop them, they were picking balls up, they were putting them down hard.
In the semifinals, Wright took three wins against Tongue River. Wright qualified for the state tournament, but Tongue River still has a chance at the state tournament if win today at noon.
“They just have to come ready to play,” Nielsen said. “We need that team back that was there in our first match. They have it in them. They’re such a talented group, and when they set their minds to it, you can’t stop them.”
Notable stats for Tongue River’s day at the tournament were: Kortni Sharp had 23 kills for the day, Tara Stimpson had 11 kills and 9 stuff blocks and Allison Reed had 18 assists and served 22 for 23.
At the same 2A tournament, Big Horn beat Saratoga 25-23, 25-15 and 25-11. In the semi-final round, Big Horn was matched against Southeast and came out on top. Scores were 25-12, 25-17, 25-20, 22-25 and 15-13.
“We struggled a little bit against Southeast, but were able to pull it out,” Coach Leigh McLaughlin said. “We didn’t roll over and die for them. They were strong, steady and intense. That’s what pushed us through.”
Big Horn plays Wright, looking for their second straight 2A East regional championship today at 5:30 p.m.
