SHERIDAN — After an unexpected cancellation of a meet in Buffalo, the Big Horn High School track team rerouted to Casper to compete in the 2014 Natrona Invite Friday. The team from Big Horn was one of three 2A teams, while the rest were 3A or 4A, and the group held their own against the larger schools.
Coach Kirk McLaughlin said Thursday’s snowfall followed by Friday’s warm weather turned Buffalo’s meet space into a mud pit. Eager to get the competitive season started after two weeks of practice, McLaughlin said he was pleased with his team’s season debut at an unexpected location.
“There were some great performances,” he said. “We had a lot of new faces trying new events and they did a great job.”
McLaughlin said several of his athletes had just wrapped up winter sports, and the first technical week of track season occurred during the school’s spring break. The team took that week off to rest and regroup for the coming meets.
McLaughlin also said he’s looking forward to seeing his team develop their skills.
“You want to put them in the best situation for them to be successful,” he said. “You see where they’re at and place them in different events.”
Senior Ashley Fox took third out of 49 competitors in the girls’ 400 meter dash with a final time of 1:03.13. Fox also placed 12th in the 100-meter race with a time of 13.65. Sophomore Baily bard finished the same race at 19th with a time of 13.89.
The boys’ 4×800 relay team consisting of Kendall Meich, Max Lube, Robert Watson and Tanner Warder finished third with a time of 10:46.28.
In overall meet scoring, the girls team finished 10th, ahead of Wright, Wheatland and Douglas High Schools. The boys ranked 12th, ahead of Laramie and Saratoga.
The Tongue River track team was also scheduled to compete in Buffalo, but took the day off in light of the cancellation. They’re headed to Greybull today.
