SHERIDAN — Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad crews will be working on the railroad crossings at First Street and Fifth Street in Sheridan late this week and early next week.
The crossing at First Street will be closed from 7 a.m. Thursday through 7 p.m. Friday. Traffic will be detoured to the Fifth Street crossing.
The crossing at Fifth Street will be closed from 7 a.m. Monday through 7 p.m. Tuesday. Traffic will be detoured to the First Street crossing.
Motorists and pedestrians are advised to allow extra travel time to account for these closures and to be watchful in the construction area.
“We apologize about any inconvenience, but the long-term benefits will improve the ride quality for motorists throughout this area as well as offer benefits for a safer, more efficient rail,” said Gus Melonas, spokesman for BNSF Railroads in Seattle.
BNSF is conducting a track upgrade program and has had two crews improving railroad crossings in Sheridan County since mid-March. Crews should finish in Parkman by mid-April.
Railroad crews will clean rock, debris and mud from the ballasts, which hold the rails on the ties and serve as the foundation of the track structure. This will allow for appropriate water drainage and will ensure that the rail is level and aligned at the crossings, according to Melonas.
“This will enhance the ride quality and safe operation of the trains, as well as maintenance equipment,” Melonas said. “It will also enhance the motoring surface for the public and pedestrians.”
BNSF works on railroad crossings along its line throughout the year as needed. Similar work has been done in Sheridan in the past, Melonas said.
Train traffic will still come through Sheridan. It will be regulated throughout the day to allow maintenance work to coincide with train operations.
