Thomas John Schmitt

August 2, 1947 – June 30, 2017

Thomas John Schmitt, 69, of Sheridan, Wyoming passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 30, 2017 at his home near Wheatland, Wyoming.  He was born on Saturday, August 2, 1947 in Germany and came to the United States with his mother, Catherin Maria Honek, when he was a young child.  He became a citizen of the United States in 1959.  Catherin and John D. Schmitt married, and John adopted Tom.

Tom attended school at Saint Mary’s in Cheyenne and graduated from high school there in 1967.  He attended the University of Wyoming and earned a Bachelor of Science degree there in 1975, majoring in economics and accounting.  Tom belonged to ROTC while in college, but did not get an officer’s commission due to his hearing problems.  He worked as an accountant and bookstore manager at Sheridan Junior College for many years, and then worked as an accountant for the City of Sheridan.  He retired to the ranch near Wheatland that his grandparents had homesteaded and built a home there.   Tom travelled throughout Europe and the United States, especially enjoying the river cruises.  He loved his pets, watching the horses in the field, getting a “good deal” on anything, and visiting with everyone he met.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his aunts and uncles, and his one cousin, Phil.

He is not survived by any family, but by his many friends, most of which he had known for many years.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 28, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at the Gorman Funeral Homes – Platte Chapel in Wheatland with Pastor Casey Schroeder of the First Christian Church officiating.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to PAWS, P.O. Box 1501, Wheatland, Wyoming 82201 or to a charity of the giver’s choice.

The Gorman Funeral Homes – Platte Chapel of Wheatland, Wyoming is in charge of the arrangements.
