SHERIDAN — The family of Sheridan High School assistant football coach Weston Johnson, who died after a two-year battle with melanoma cancer Jan. 17 at his home in Wray, Colo., has started a scholarship to honor Johnson’s memory.
The “Never Flinch” Scholarship will be awarded to one graduating senior from Sheridan High School and one senior from Wray High School each year.
To be eligible for the scholarship, an applicant must be a student athlete with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The student must also submit an essay discussing an adversity he or she has overcome in life.
Johnson was a 2005 graduate of Wray High School who received a scholarship to the University of Wyoming to play football for the Cowboys. He graduated from UW in December 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and finance after being named the top UW marketing student his senior year.
Upon graduation, Johnson signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons. After a short stint with the Falcons, he moved to Sheridan in 2012. He was employed by Emit Technologies in a sales and marketing position and served as assistant football coach at Sheridan High School.
“Weston influenced many during his battle with Melanoma. He was a true fighter and touched many lives as he faced each and every treatment and surgery. He lived his life to the fullest for 27 years and Weston ‘Never Flinched,’” according to a press release about the scholarship.
When Johnson’s battle with metastatic melanoma began, football staffs at Sheridan and Big Horn high schools organized a local “Never Flinch” campaign complete with T-shirts that sported “Never Flinch” on the front and “Cowboy Tough” on the back that became a common sight at SHS Bronc athletic events.
Sheridan High School football also dedicated its 2013 season to Johnson at its year-end banquet.
Students interested in applying for the “Never Flinch” scholarship can find applications and instructions in the counseling office at Sheridan High School or online on the Wray School District website at www.wrayschools.org.
Once logged into the site, click on the “Schools” tab, the “WHS” tab, the “Counseling Dept.” tab and then the “Local Scholarships” link.
Application deadline is May 1 of each year. Mailed applications must be postmarked May 1.
