SHERIDAN — After taking second place numerous times, Sheridan High School’s Jack Mavrakis finally earned a win at the Gillette golf tournament on Friday, shooting a 70.
“I am very excited that I finally won against some good competitors,” Mavrakis said. “I have been practicing extra hours — pretty much until dark — to get this win. I have been working a lot on my putting.”
Sheridan’s boys and girls teams both placed third at the tournament.
On the boys’ side, Cheyenne East won the tournament with a 306. Laramie placed second at 311 and Sheridan came in third, shooting a 322. Cheyenne Central placed fourth with a 323. Kelly Walsh placed fifth with a 332 and Gillette came in sixth at 334.
On the girls’ side, Kelly Walsh placed first, shooting a 248. Natrona came in second with a 357. Sheridan barely topped fourth-place Gillette, shooting a 296 compared to Gillette’s 298.
“It’s always wonderful beating Gillette, especially at their home tournament,” Sheridan golf coach Larry Martoglio said. “Each week the team is playing better, not only individually, but also as a team. Gillette’s tournament by far was the toughest field of golfers we have seen, and I think the team did great against the competition.”
Sheridan’s golf team will host a tournament Thursday at Kendrick Golf Course.
