SHERIDAN — A Sheridan man was cited by police at Centennial Theatre on East Alger Street Tuesday evening for being in possession of a small amount of marijuana.

Darren Zimmerman, 21, admitted to having the drug on him after a fellow movie patron complained to management about the smell.

Sheridan Police Sgt. Travis Koltiska said Zimmerman was attending a showing of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” in a small theater with only a few people in it. The film is about a man who escapes his life through daydreams.

Koltiska said it’s unclear whether the distinct smell of marijuana smoke or the odor emitted from the bud prompted the complaint from the other patron.

Officers arrived at the theater and were immediately able to identify the source of the odor and asked Zimmerman about the smell.

“(Zimmerman) readily admitted he had it,” Koltiska said, indicating he turned over a tin containing a very small amount of marijuana to the police.

Police issued Zimmerman a citation for possession of the substance. Zimmerman must appear in Sheridan County Circuit Court on April 1.

Possession of less than three ounces of marijuana is a misdemeanor in Wyoming punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
