for 2016 run begins
Re: Milbank column, Press, Jan. 16
With the ink still wet on the special reports on the Benghazi tragedy from the House Armed Services Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee, the purveyors of leftwing spin began circling the wagons around the frontrunner for the 2016 Democrat presidential nomination – Hillary Clinton.
One example: Dana Milbank’s ludicrous column, “Seeing Al-Qaeda behind Every Tree.” Milbank mocks the notion that the terrorists who attacked our facility in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012 were affiliated with the notorious Islamic terrorist organization. He writes that Ansar Al Sharia is, at most, “linked to another group affiliated with Al Qaeda.” Does he think these folks carry dues cards?
Such hair splitting, mockery, and verbal smirking are akin to Bill Clinton’s infamous remark: “that depends on what the definition of ‘is’ is.” It smacks of the beginning of a cover up of the cover up. Both congressional reports clearly state that Hillary Clinton’s Department of State is primarily responsible for the deplorable lack of security in Benghazi.
What truly deserves mockery and scorn is the ridiculous fiction concocted by President Obama’s administration (and actively supported by Clinton) that the attack in Benghazi was caused by some anti-Muslim video. Many questions still need to be answered about that, e.g. who sent then-U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice out to the Sunday news shows to sell this fiction? How could Clinton not have known that this was obviously a terrorist attack when this fact was communicated to President Obama by then-Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dempsey minutes after the attack began?
From the outset, this was an effort to shield Obama during an election campaign after he had proclaimed that “Bin Laden is dead and Al Qaeda is on the run.” It just wouldn’t do to learn before election day that the entire video story was a façade and that Islamic terrorists in Libya – far from being on the run – had just assassinated our ambassador to Libya. That story would have debunked Obama’s campaign rhetoric.
Hopefully these investigations will continue and, as with virtually all political cover ups, the truth will eventually come out. One also hopes it emerges before Hillary Clinton becomes a serious candidate for the presidency.
