SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College Lady Generals topped Lamar Community College, 88-87, Sunday night in the first round of the Region IX tournament being played in Rock Springs this week.
Sheridan College coach Frank McCarthy said Lamar played a “wild style,” substituting all five players every minute or so. This meant each of the 15 women on the LCC roster saw playing time.
Lamar also attempted 104 shots, scoring 33. Fifty-seven of those attempts were made from behind the arc, but Lamar sunk just 12 of those.
“It was just a very different style of play,” McCarthy said. “The kids played well, they were excited.”
The Lady Generals went into the halftime break with a slight lead, 45-42. McCarthy added that he was proud of how his team battled, as they had fallen behind by nine points with just two minutes to go in the second half.
But five of his players put up double digits. Sierra Toms led the team with 21 points while Josie Three Irons and Tiana Hanson each put up 10. Morgan Wille, who was also named to the Region IX defensive team, contributed 13 points. All-Region IX player Madison Forney added 14 and pulled down 18 rebounds.
“Tonight will be huge,” McCarthy said.
The Lady Generals will face Western Wyoming Community College, which won the sub-region title, on WWCC’s home court at 7 p.m.
“We need to play with the same energy we did last night,” McCarthy said, but added that the game will allow the Lady Generals to get back to a style and pace with which they are more comfortable.
Generals defeat Otero, 83-65
From staff reports
SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College Generals saw victory in the first round of the men’s basketball Region IX tournament Saturday night.
The men defeated the Otero Junior College Rattlers 83-65.
Sophomore guard Fredéric Duré lead the team with 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Fellow sophomore guard Jeff Amazan was a close second scoring 17 points in the second half alone including three 3-pointers and claiming 7 rebounds.
Freshmen forward Abednego Lufile rounded out the leaders list as the only General to score a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 6 blocks.
“Otero was a tough first round opponent,” said head coach Steve Smiley. “They are really good but we played hard and took the game from a tight half-time and increase the lead a little.”
The Generals move on in the tournament to face Northwest tonight at 6 p.m.
SC beat Northwest twice during the regular season, both in close games.
“We had a game winner at the buzzer at their place this season,” said Smiley, “and they beat another tough team, Laramie County, last night to advance, so it’s going to be a good game.”
The tournament at Northeastern Junior College will end with the championship match Wednesday.
