SHERIDAN — Sheridan College basketball teams swept a doubleheader with Colorado Northwestern Wednesday night at the Bruce Hoffman Golden Dome, beginning a busy weekend on the right foot.
The Lady Generals overcame a three-point first-half deficit, building a comfortable lead early in the second half to earn the 66-55 win. The Lady Generals (7-4) were led again by freshman Sierra Toms, who scored 23, and sophomore Josie Three Irons who had 19.
The Generals (9-2) ran out to an early lead and won easily 105-73.
The Lion’s Club tournament serves as the teams’ final primer before North Sub-Region IX conference play begins. The men and women both open Wednesday and Friday at Western Wyoming and then Gillette.
Wednesday’s games were a quiet pre-Thanksgiving affair crowd-wise, but both teams on-floor performances were demonstrative of their progression at this point in the season.
“I don’t think we played by any stretch as good as we can play,” women’s head coach Frank McCarthy said, “but this time of year an ugly win is better than no win at all.”
Offensively he admitted that his team struggle but was pleased that the defensive effort — they held the Spartans to 20 percent shooting in the second half — gave them the chance to win.
“You’re going to have games like that when the ball just won’t go in,” McCarthy added. “You still come out with an 11-point win against a pretty quality opponent, that’s important.”
Tonight, the Lady Generals play Eastern Wyoming College, who defeated them earlier this fall. Saturday they host Mamlstrom Air Force Base, a team from Cascade County, Mont. Both games are at 5 p.m. Generals games are at 7 p.m. both nights.
In the nightcap Wednesday, the Generals good ball movement opened up sharpshooting early on and their lead was never threatened. Sheridan hit on 11 of 20 from behind the arc.
Five Generals scored in double figures. Kyi Thomas had 18 and Jamir Andrews chipped in 17. Abendego Lufile had 14 points and 11 boards, Jeff Amazan scored 11 and Kaileb Rodriguez added 10.
Their opponents today and tomorrow may bring more of a challenge. Tonight’s matchup with Dakota College out of Bottineau, N.D., posts a 9-1 record.
Saturday the Generals get South Sub-Region IX foe Laramie County Community College (5-2), a team they narrowly escaped a few weeks ago in Cheyenne.
