Grant allows students to enjoy fresh produce at TRE

RANCHESTER — Tongue River Elementary School received a $12,500 fresh fruits and vegetables grant from the USDA National Lunch Program for the 2013-2014 school year. The money will be used to provide fresh fruit and vegetables for 250 students at TRE who are participating in the program. Wyoming schools with a significant free and reduced lunch population were eligible to apply for the grant through the Wyoming Department of Education.

“The reality is that some of our students arrive hungry and get little to no fresh produce at home,” said Deb Hofmeier, principal of TRE. “Good nutrition is essential for all of our students. This grant allows us to reliably offer fresh fruits and vegetables every school day.”

Produce for the program is purchased locally from Warehouse Market. The school supplements this with produce grown in its school garden, which has operated for the last decade on land and water donated by the town of Ranchester.
