SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Bronc wrestling team had a good first day at the Shane Shatto Memorial wrestling tournament in Douglas on Friday.
Head coach Tyson Shatto said that the team wrestled well, with seven wrestlers moving on to Saturday and the team sitting in second place — just 19.5 points behind Cheyenne East at the 26-team event.
“Our mind-set has shifted gears toward finding opponents that we need to beat going into regionals and state,” he said, his team coming off a tough three duals last Saturday against Billings competition.
“We want to seek out some Wyoming competition and see where we’re sitting in the state so we can try to put the best team out on the mat and make a run at a state title.”
The Broncs put 18 wrestlers in the varsity competition today in Douglas, doubling up a few weight classes and adding six more on the JV side. Each weight class that they put kids in scored points, and seven moved into the semifinals: Braxton Cooper, 113; Tucker Goss, 120; Hayden Hastings, 132; Timmy Cowan, 182; Cody Delk, 182; Tory Music, 220; and Dane Chambers at heavyweight.
They also have others wrestling for a shot at third and fourth Saturday.
