Seventy-three percent is the amount of energy saved by upgrading to a new energy-efficient gas-powered lawn mower. Newer mowers also emit fewer pollutants.

More ways of being eco-friendly at home in honor of Earth Day, April 22.

• Install ceiling fans-they can reduce air conditioning cost in the summer by as much as 40 percent. In winter, they can save up to 10 percent in heating costs by circulating warm air from ceiling to floor.

• Replace appliances with energy-efficient models. New refrigerators, dishwashers, washers and dryers are so much more energy-efficient than models from even a few years ago that the energy savings might offset the cost of the new appliance.

• Plant an herb garden.
• Create a compost bin.
• Stop using disposable bags.
• Wash laundry in cold water instead of hot.
• Drive the speed limit and combine all your errands for the week in one trip.
• Support the local economy and shop at your farmer’s market.
• Pay your bills online.
• Subscribe to good eco-friendly blogs.
• Before buying anything new, check on Craigslist or Freecycle.
• Support local restaurants that use food derived less than 100 miles away.
• Fix leaky faucets.
• Make your own household cleaners.
• Line dry laundry.
• Watch “The Story of Stuff” with your kids, and talk with them about the impact household trash has on our landfills.
• Collect rainwater and water your houseplants and garden.
• Donate to and shop thrift stores.
