SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College soccer team looked destined to equalize Wednesday afternoon.

Playing a makeup game from Oct. 5 after snowstorms kept them off the field, the Generals fell 2-1 to the Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen yesterday at Maier Field.

“It was another close one that we just couldn’t seem to close out,” head coach Austin Albers said. “Our guys fought hard though and put themselves in a position to force extra time.”

A physical contest ended as the Generals free kick from Corbin Shriner bounced under the wall, and three Generals scrambled unmarked with a bouncing ball in front of the keeper, but were ruled offside.

Referees gave the Plainsmen a penalty kick in an otherwise even, scoreless contest in the 63rd minute after what the far-side line judge ruled as a handball in the box. The Plainsmen scored on a counter attack in the 78th minute to go up 2-0.

Shriner hit a low-riding free kick into the corner of the net with less than five minutes remaining after Tanner Alseike was fouled just outside the top left corner of the penalty box.

The Generals swarmed, pushing up their front line, but were unable to come away with the result despite three second-half corners and the lion’s share of possession. In extra time, defender Kalob Rodriguez stole a ball in the Plainsmen final third and drove square across the edge of the box where he was toppled by defenders and the Generals earned their final free kick.

SC teams close their seasons against Laramie County Community College and Western Wyoming Friday and Saturday.
