Ucross opens new exhibit @ Ucross Foundation Art Gallery

UCROSS — The Ucross Foundation has opened a new show in its art gallery, “Views from Oregon: Sixteen artists.”

The show opened Feb. 6 and will run through May 12. A reception will take place April 22 from 4-6 p.m.

All 16 artists participating in the show are from Oregon and were artists in residence at Ucross between 2013-2016.

The Ucross Foundation Art Gallery is located at 30 Big Red Lane in Ucross.

Tickets for FAB Women’s Conference now on sale @ The Sheridan Press

HERIDAN — The fifth annual FAB (For. About. By.) Women’s Conference will take place April 28 at the Sheridan College Edward A. Whitney Academic Center.

Tickets for the event are now on sale.

The conference, which will begin with registration at noon, will include a keynote presentation from Shelli Johnson.

Johnson is an entrepreneur, life and leadership coach, consultant and Epic adventure guide who has coached more than 130 individual leaders from throughout the U.S. in the last five years.

She lives in Lander with her husband and their three sons.

Johnson was recently featured in Prevention magazine.

Other sessions for the conference will focus on how to have difficult conversations in the workplace, navigating career transitions, suicide prevention training, how to create your own herb garden, maintaining passion in your relationships and how to create travel plans for memorable adventures.

Tickets for the event are $40 for the conference, which includes lunch and snacks, $30 for the FAB Woman of the Year banquet and $65 for both.

Brinton to open two exhibits next week @ Brinton Museum

BIG HORN — The Brinton Museum will open two new shows next week.

The 12th Illustrator Show — The Art of John Potter will be on display in the Mars Reception Gallery.

In the S.K. Johnston Jr. Family Gallery, an exhibit entitled “Gollings & Kleiber: In the Classroom” will be on display.

Both exhibits will be on display from March 15 through April 30.

In addition to the show openings, Ken Schuster will present a gallery talk on the  “Gollings & Kleiber: In the Classroom” exhibit April 27 at 7 p.m.

Church to offer ‘Christ in the Passover’ presentation @ First United Methodist Church

SHERIDAN — Samuel Rood of Jews for Jesus will re-create the traditional Passover service and explain how it foreshadowed Jesus’ death and resurrection in a presentation called “Christ in the Passover” at First United Methodist Church on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Rood will set a table with items traditionally used at the Passover meal and detail their spiritual significance.

He will also explain the connection between the events of the first Passover in Egypt and the redemption that Jesus accomplished, as well as the deep bond between the ancient Passover feast and the Christian communion celebration today. 

Jews for Jesus has presented “Christ in the Passover” at more than 38,000 churches. Rood will also answer questions after the presentation.

Sheridan’s historic places, spaces to be highlighted in program @ Sheridan Inn

SHERIDAN — The Alliance for Historic Wyoming will host a community conversation about Sheridan’s historic places and spaces and why they matter to the community. 

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will take place at the Historic Sheridan Inn on Thursday from 7-9 p.m.

The presentation will include Lesley Gilmore, a preservation architect with CTA Architects, who has done multiple projects in Sheridan. Representatives from the AHW will also speak about the importance of historic places and spaces.

In addition to the presentation, representatives from AHW and Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office will attend meetings this week with city and county officials, local nonprofits and business owners to discuss historic preservation’s affect on economic development and tourism.

SHERIDAN — The Republican Women of Sheridan County are currently seeking applicants for a college scholarship program, according to Melinda Brennan, scholarship chairwoman. 

 One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a registered female Republican who is a Sheridan County resident, at least 18 years old and planning to attend a junior college, college, university or vocational trade school beginning in the summer or fall session of 2017.  

The deadline for the application is April 1.

Beloved ‘Frog and Toad’ coming to the WYO Theater @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The WYO Theater will host a production of “A Year with Frog and Toad” on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Based on Arnold Lobel’s well-loved books, the jazzy, upbeat score bubbles with melody. Part vaudeville and part make-believe, “A Year with Frog and Toad” tells the story of a friendship that endures.

This whimsical show follows two great friends — the cheerful, popular Frog, and the rather grumpy Toad — through four fun-filled seasons.

Wuerker to host oil painting classes @ SAGE Community Arts

SHERIDAN — Local artist Jenny Wuerker will host a series of oil painting classes each Wednesday between March 15 and May 24.

The hands-on painting class will help attendees improve their skills, discover new techniques and learn to paint directly from observation.

All levels are welcome to attend the class, which costs $150 for SAGE Community Arts members and $175 for nonmembers.

SHERIDAN — The deadline to register for the Big Horn Mountain Chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management’s annual seminar will be April 7.

Speakers for the full day seminar, planned for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 18, will include coach Sherry Winn and Brad T. Cave.

Winn will cover three essential ingredients for success and emphasize communication and team building.

Cave will give a legislative update, comment on the changes during the first 90 days of the Trump administration and discuss retaliation in the workplace.

The cost to a attend either the morning or afternoon session for members is $75; the cost to attend both is $125. For nonmembers, the morning or afternoon sessions cost $90 or $155 for both.

The seminar will take place at the Sheridan Holiday Inn and Convention Center, located at 1809 Sugarland Drive.

Local libraries to host book discussions through spring @ Fulmer Library

SHERIDAN — The annual Claire Yorks Spring Book Discussion Series will begin in January at Sheridan County libraries. Story Branch and Tongue River Branch libraries will offer the series “Immigration: On Becoming an American” and Sheridan Fulmer Library will offer “Growing Up in the West.” 

Katie Curtiss will lead discussions at Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library and Norleen Healy will lead at Story and Tongue River branches.

Story Branch Library and Tongue River Branch Library will start their discussions in January and Sheridan Fulmer will start its discussions in February. Books are available now at the front desk of each library.

Participants can attend any or all sessions and can also attend sessions at different libraries if they choose. There is no charge for these programs and new participants are welcome.

The Claire Yorks Reading and Discussion series is funded by an endowment established at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library. Yorks was born in Sheridan to Leroy and Mildred Calkins.

She graduated from high school in Sheridan and moved to Seattle to work in the aircraft industry in World War II. There she met and married her husband, Samuel Yorks.

She finished college and became a social worker in Portland.

When she retired in 1982, the Yorks moved to Sheridan where they were involved community volunteers. Sam Yorks was the first moderator of adult reading and discussion groups at the Fulmer Library in Sheridan.

Beloved ‘Frog and Toad’ coming to the WYO Theater @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The WYO Theater will host a production of “A Year with Frog and Toad” on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Based on Arnold Lobel’s well-loved books, the jazzy, upbeat score bubbles with melody. Part vaudeville and part make-believe, “A Year with Frog and Toad” tells the story of a friendship that endures.

This whimsical show follows two great friends — the cheerful, popular Frog, and the rather grumpy Toad — through four fun-filled seasons. 

Tickets cost $17 for adults, $10 for students and $12.50 for seniors and military members. Tickets can be purchased online at wyotheater.com, at the theater’s box office or by phone at 672-9084.

SHERIDAN — Local artist Jenny Wuerker will host a series of oil painting classes each Wednesday between March 15 and May 24.

The hands-on painting class will help attendees improve their skills, discover new techniques and learn to paint directly from observation.

All levels are welcome to attend the class, which costs $150 for SAGE Community Arts members and $175 for nonmembers.

Register for SHRM seminar by April 7 @ Society of Human Resource Management’s annual seminar deadline

SHERIDAN — The deadline to register for the Big Horn Mountain Chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management’s annual seminar will be April 7.

Speakers for the full day seminar, planned for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 18, will include coach Sherry Winn and Brad T. Cave.

Winn will cover three essential ingredients for success and emphasize communication and team building.

Cave will give a legislative update, comment on the changes during the first 90 days of the Trump administration and discuss retaliation in the workplace.

The cost to a attend either the morning or afternoon session for members is $75; the cost to attend both is $125. For nonmembers, the morning or afternoon sessions cost $90 or $155 for both.

The seminar will take place at the Sheridan Holiday Inn and Convention Center, located at 1809 Sugarland Drive.

Local libraries to host book discussions through spring @ Fulmer Library

SHERIDAN — The annual Claire Yorks Spring Book Discussion Series will begin in January at Sheridan County libraries. Story Branch and Tongue River Branch libraries will offer the series “Immigration: On Becoming an American” and Sheridan Fulmer Library will offer “Growing Up in the West.” 

Katie Curtiss will lead discussions at Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library and Norleen Healy will lead at Story and Tongue River branches.

Story Branch Library and Tongue River Branch Library will start their discussions in January and Sheridan Fulmer will start its discussions in February. Books are available now at the front desk of each library.

Participants can attend any or all sessions and can also attend sessions at different libraries if they choose. There is no charge for these programs and new participants are welcome.

• Feb. 14 – “English Creek” at 6:30 p.m.

• March 14 – “The Meadow” at 6:30 p.m.

The Claire Yorks Reading and Discussion series is funded by an endowment established at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library. Yorks was born in Sheridan to Leroy and Mildred Calkins.

She graduated from high school in Sheridan and moved to Seattle to work in the aircraft industry in World War II. There she met and married her husband, Samuel Yorks.

She finished college and became a social worker in Portland.

When she retired in 1982, the Yorks moved to Sheridan where they were involved community volunteers. Sam Yorks was the first moderator of adult reading and discussion groups at the Fulmer Library in Sheridan.
