SJHS, SHS to host concerts this week @ SJHS

SHERIDAN — Sheridan schools will host two performances this week to highlight students’ musical talents.

On Thursday at 6:30 p.m., the Sheridan Junior High School orchestra will perform in the school’s Early Auditorium. SJHS is located at 500 Lewis St.

On the same day, at 7 p.m., the Sheridan High School Jazz Band will perform in the school’s auditorium. SHS is located at 1056 Long Drive.

Buzz Cason, friends to perform at WYO Theater @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — Buzz Cason, the producer of Buddy Holly’s band The Crickets and the founder of Nashville’s first rock and roll band, will perform at the WYO Theater to benefit Project Schoolhouse on Wednesday.

The show will begin at 6 p.m. 

Cason has had hit songs with U2, Pearl Jam, Jimmy Buffet and The Beatles. He will be joined by Robert Cline Jr., Sean Devine, Tab Barker and Jon and Cody Quarterman to celebrate and raise funds for the nonprofit Project Schoolhouse, which is an international organization that focuses on education, clean water and sanitation in rural Nicaraguan communities.

Tickets for the event cost $18.50 per person. Tickets are general admission.

SHERIDAN — Holy Name Catholic School will present “Rip!” by Bruce Scigliano and George Krawczyk on March 23-24.

The fast-paced, one-act musical will be performed at 7 p.m. March 23 and 9:30 a.m. March 24.

Both performances will take place in the Holy Name parish hall.

Adapted from the story of Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving, the show will be presented in the style of an old-time radio broadcast.

Admission to the event is free, although donations will be accepted at the door. Holy Name parish hall is located at 260 E. Loucks St.

Sheridan County Republican Party to meet Saturday @ Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Republican Party will conduct a Central Committee meeting on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Inner Circle at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library for the purpose of electing officers.

All Republicans and precinct committee persons are asked to attend. Any precinct committee person wishing to utilize a proxy is asked to contact Chairman Ryan Mulholland at 461-9707 prior to the meeting date.

According to the county bylaws, a person residing in the same precinct as the duly elected committee person may carry a proxy if authorized in writing.

Light refreshments will be served.

The Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library is located at 335 W. Alger St.

 
WYO Theater to simulcast ‘Idomeneo’ @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The WYO Theater will host the next edition of “The Met: Live in HD” on Saturday at 10:55 a.m.

The simulcast will feature a performance of Mozart’s “Idomeneo.”

“Idomeneo” explores the motivations and emotions of humans whose fates seem beyond their own control. 

Tickets for the show are $21 per person and $11 for students. Tickets may be purchased through the WYO Theater box office, wyotheater.com or 672-9084.

Big Horn High School students to perform ‘Godspell’ @ Big Horn High School

BIG HORN — Big Horn High School choir students will tell the stories of John the Baptist, Jesus and Judas when they present a production of “Godspell JR.” on March 28 at the school’s auditorium under the direction of music/drama director Dustin G. Olsen.

Conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, “Godspell” is one of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time. The musical uses major episodes in the Bible — including the baptism of Jesus, the Last Supper, his arrest and crucifixion — to explore important ideas like compassion, love, forgiveness and sacrifice for the greater good.  

“There is a wonderful symmetry in this production,” Olsen said. “These students are working together as a team to present a musical, which at its core reminds us how our individual actions ‘day by day’ help us to build a beautiful community and world.

“We have chosen to bring the timeless musical ‘Godspell’ to today’s world,” he continued. “This production is set inside a present day classroom with Jesus being the teacher. As with the original ‘Godspell’ production, the audience is part of the cast in our production as well. Together we will celebrate the teachings and life of Jesus.”

The Big Horn High School choir will present the production March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Big Horn auditorium. Tickets are free, but donations will be accepted.

Big Horn High School is located at 333 Highway 335 in Big Horn.

Next Chamber Coffee set for Wednesday @ Lazy R Campground and Cabins

RANCHESTER — The next Chamber Coffee organized by the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce will take place Wednesday beginning at 8 a.m.

Lazy R Campground and Cabins in Ranchester will host the event, which is meant to provide a way to network and discuss important issues with the communities in Sheridan County.

Lazy R Campground and Cabins is located at 652 U.S. Highway 14 in Ranchester.

Beloved ‘Frog and Toad’ coming to the WYO Theater @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The WYO Theater will host a production of “A Year with Frog and Toad” on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Based on Arnold Lobel’s well-loved books, the jazzy, upbeat score bubbles with melody. Part vaudeville and part make-believe, “A Year with Frog and Toad” tells the story of a friendship that endures.

This whimsical show follows two great friends — the cheerful, popular Frog, and the rather grumpy Toad — through four fun-filled seasons. 

Tickets cost $17 for adults, $10 for students and $12.50 for seniors and military members. Tickets can be purchased online at wyotheater.com, at the theater’s box office or by phone at 672-9084.

Akcita Win to gather Tuesday @ First Christian Church

SHERIDAN — The April meeting for Akcita Win will be Tuesday, April 4, at 6 p.m. at the First Christian Church. 

Dinner will be catered and the cost is $10. The group plans to bring items to donate to Advocacy & Resource Center.

 Akcita Win is a women’s sorority that meets monthly and new members are always welcome.

SHERIDAN — The Doubleday Sports Complex Committee will host a public meeting Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The meeting will take place at the Sheridan Memorial Hospital office at 61 S. Gould St.

The meeting will focus on the preliminary plan for the sports complex and provide area residents with an opportunity to provide feedback and ideas on the design to fit the needs of local sports groups that will use the facility.

Archaeological Society meeting to focus on Bomber Mountain @ Holiday Inn

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan-Johnson County chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society will gather Thursday for its monthly meeting. This month’s focus will be Bomber Mountain. 

Sylvia Bruner of the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum in Buffalo will give the presentation.

Beginning as a part-time employee at Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site in 2000, Bruner quickly obtained a love of history and museums which developed even further with a five-year stint of Civil War and Indian Wars reenacting. She was hired as the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum’s registrar in 2003 and in May 2016 she became the director. 

Bruner’s presentation will focus on the events surrounding the crash of the B-17 Flying Fortress bomber that led to the naming of Bomber Mountain in the Bighorns.

Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with the presentation following at about 7 p.m. The event will take place in the banquet room attached to the main dining room of the Holiday Inn in Sheridan.

The Holiday Inn is located at 1809 Sugarland Drive.

Annie, Amy Smith to perform at the WYO @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — Annie and Amy Smith will perform at the WYO Theater Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The Smiths are fifth generation Wyoming natives and professional songwriters. They have toured as Nashville Recording artists for Warner Bros. Records, performed on USO Tours and presidents.

The cost to attend is $15 for adults, $11 for seniors and military members, and $7 for students.

Trans-Nebraska Players to perform at Sheridan College @ The Whitney Center for the Arts

SHERIDAN — The Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College will present the Trans-Nebraska Players on April 19 at 7:30 p.m.

The Trans-Nebraska Players feature piano, flute, violin, cello and viola. The Trans-Nebraska Players will also offer a masterclass for music students on April 20 from 3:30-5 p.m. The masterclass is free and open to the public.

The Trans-Nebraska Players have been performing together since 2010 and, partly due to their slightly unusual instrumentation, have been active performing music that is not in the mainstream. They have premiered more than a half dozen pieces, resurrected works by the old masters and reconstructed existing pieces to work for the ensemble.

The ensemble includes Franziska Brech, a native of Munich, Germany; David C. Neely, who is a professor of violin at the University of Nebraska — Lincoln; Clark Potter, who is a professor of viola at the University of Nebraska — Lincoln; Noah Rogoff, who is an associate professor of cello at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and the director of the UNK String Project; and James Margetts, who is dean of essential studies and the School of Liberal Arts at Chadron State College.

Tickets cost $10 per person and $5 for students. Tickets are available through the WYO Theater or at the door. Information on this concert and all other Whitney Center for the Arts events can be found at WhitneyArts.org.

Real Resistance to gather Thursday @ Luminous Brewhouse

Representatives from multiple agencies throughout Sheridan and the congressional delegation have been invited to speak about the proposed budget and its affect on local programs.

Live from The Met to feature ‘Eugene Onegin’ @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The WYO Theater will present Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” as part of its The Metropolitan Opera: Live in High Definition series at 10:55 a.m. Saturday.

As part of its efforts to reinvigorate opera and reach out to a broader public, The Metropolitan Opera in New York launched the series of opera performances transmitted live to movie theaters and other venues around the world.

“Eugene Onegin” is the story of a selfish hero who lives to regret his rejection of a young woman’s love and a dual with his best friend.

Join community in ‘Celebrate the Arts’

SHERIDAN — SAGE Community Arts, Sheridan Public Arts Committee, Frackelton’s and the WYO Theater have combined efforts to create a daylong celebration of the arts and artists.

The activities for the day include Dining For A Cause at Frackelton’s, the dedication of a new statue on the corner of Main and Brundage streets, an art opening of a show curated by Arin Waddell at SAGE and Spencer Bohren in concert at the WYO Theater.

Here’s a rundown of the day’s events:

• All day — Dining For A Cause at Frackelton’s to benefit the Sheridan Public Arts Committee, WYO Theater and SAGE Community Arts. One hundred percent of sales from the day will be donated to the organizations.

• 4-6 p.m. — Artist and community opening of “The Long Line: Student to Masters in Drawing,” curated by Arin Waddell at SAGE Community Arts, 21 West Brundage St.

• 5 p.m. — Unveiling of Allan Houser’s “Interconnection,” a permanent addition to the downtown public sculptures. Also, an introduction of 2017 on-loan sculptures will be given at the corner of Main and Brundage streets.

• 7:30 p.m. — Spencer Bohren concert at the WYO Theater, 42 N. Main St. Tickets are $18 apiece and available at wyotheater.com or by calling 672-9084.

Calmus to perform at SC @ Sheridan Collegeq

SHERIDAN — The Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College will present the Calmus Vocal Ensemble on April 26 at 7:30 p.m.

This renowned a cappella quintet presents “All the World’s a Stage,” a program of music inspired by the plays and poetry of the immortal bard, William Shakespeare. You will hear songs — all in English — by composers from all over the world ranging across five centuries to commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death that should please literary and music enthusiasts alike.

Excerpts from “Twelfth Night,” “Cymbeline,” “Othello” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be interspersed with settings of the sonnets. The concert will conclude with four distinct versions of the poem “Full Fathom Five” from “The Tempest.”

Composers covered will include 16th century Englishmen Orlando Gibbons and Henry Purcell to contemporary artists like Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Tavener, Nancy Wertsch, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi and others.

The Calmus Ensemble’s five performers are from the renowned St. Thomas Church Choir School and combine a pure female soprano voice with four male voices ranging from bass to countertenor.
