AARP to gather Friday @ Heritage Towers

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan chapter of the AARP will gather Friday at the Heritage Towers dining room.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a potluck dinner and the meeting will start at 5:50 p.m. 

The program will include a legislative update from Wayne Schatz, AARP legislative chair for Northeast Wyoming.

Those planning to attend are asked to bring $3 and a potluck dish to share.

Sheridan County Republican Party to meet Saturday @ Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Republican Party will conduct a Central Committee meeting on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Inner Circle at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library for the purpose of electing officers.

All Republicans and precinct committee persons are asked to attend. Any precinct committee person wishing to utilize a proxy is asked to contact Chairman Ryan Mulholland at 461-9707 prior to the meeting date.

According to the county bylaws, a person residing in the same precinct as the duly elected committee person may carry a proxy if authorized in writing.

Light refreshments will be served.

SHERIDAN — The Doubleday Sports Complex Committee will host a public meeting Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The meeting will take place at the Sheridan Memorial Hospital office at 61 S. Gould St.

The meeting will focus on the preliminary plan for the sports complex and provide area residents with an opportunity to provide feedback and ideas on the design to fit the needs of local sports groups that will use the facility.

Archaeological Society meeting to focus on Bomber Mountain @ Holiday Inn

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan-Johnson County chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society will gather Thursday for its monthly meeting. This month’s focus will be Bomber Mountain. 

Sylvia Bruner of the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum in Buffalo will give the presentation.

Beginning as a part-time employee at Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site in 2000, Bruner quickly obtained a love of history and museums which developed even further with a five-year stint of Civil War and Indian Wars reenacting. She was hired as the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum’s registrar in 2003 and in May 2016 she became the director. 

Bruner’s presentation will focus on the events surrounding the crash of the B-17 Flying Fortress bomber that led to the naming of Bomber Mountain in the Bighorns.

Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with the presentation following at about 7 p.m. The event will take place in the banquet room attached to the main dining room of the Holiday Inn in Sheridan.

The Holiday Inn is located at 1809 Sugarland Drive.

Real Resistance to gather Thursday @ Luminous Brewhouse

SHERIDAN — Real Resistance Wyoming will host a public forum at 6 p.m. Thursday at which community members will discuss the impacts of President Donald Trump’s proposed budget.

Representatives from multiple agencies throughout Sheridan and the congressional delegation have been invited to speak about the proposed budget and its affect on local programs.

The event will take place at Luminous Brewhouse, located at 504 Broadway St.

Ucross new exhibit reception @ Ucross Foundation Art Gallery

UCROSS — The Ucross Foundation has opened a new show in its art gallery, “Views from Oregon: Sixteen artists.”

The show opened Feb. 6 and will run through May 12. A reception will take place April 22 from 4-6 p.m.

All 16 artists participating in the show are from Oregon and were artists in residence at Ucross between 2013-2016.

The Ucross Foundation Art Gallery is located at 30 Big Red Lane in Ucross.

SC to host reception for student show @ Sheridan College

SHERIDAN — The Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College will present the 70th annual Sheridan College Student Juried Art Exhibition. The exhibition is on display through May 14 in the Edward A. Whitney Gallery. The opening reception will take place May 4 from 5-7 p.m.

The exhibition was juried by local artist Joel Ostlind. Twenty-four Sheridan College students submitted work and 18 were selected to show. Those exhibiting are Taryn Bohlman, Shaelyn Moore Hytrek, Rebekah Blommel, Nichole Wolz, Lydia Johnson, Kari Lentz, Jonathan Kibodeaux, Helene Todd, Emily Swanson, Elijah McClendon, Dylan Campbell Peterson, Diana Goodrich, David Danielson, Colleen Swan, Cecilia Riddle, Ashlee Purcella and Trudy Schoonover.

The pieces were installed by Sheridan College students Nichole Wrigley and Jonathan Kibodeaux.

The Edward A. Whitney Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.

The reception is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

During the meeting, the task force will evaluate recommendations and propose implementation.

The group is scheduled to meet from 1-5 p.m. Wednesday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon Friday. Public comment periods are scheduled for 8-8:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

Public comment is also accepted at http://wyoparks.state.wy.us/ORTF.aspx?tab=0 on the Outdoor Recreation Task Force website.

Additionally, there will be a “Listening Session” with State Parks and Cultural Resources Director Darin Westby from 5:15-6:15 p.m. Thursday for an update on the task force and to chat about outdoor recreation. This meeting is also scheduled at the Sheridan Inn.

The Outdoor Recreation Task Force will develop policy recommendations for Governor Mead’s consideration. Recommendations may include principles to guide and identify the benefits of outdoor recreation, outline efforts to expand business opportunities and improve recreation infrastructure in the state’s second largest industry.

WGFD meeting on wolf hunting, other issues @ WGFD regional office

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Region of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department will host a public meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Sheridan Regional Office.

The purpose of the meeting is to gather public input on proposed wolf hunting seasons, wildlife damage claims, mountain lion hunting seasons and aquatic invasive species regulations. This meeting is one of several being held across Wyoming to discuss these issues.

All interested parties are encouraged to attend. Written comments will be accepted at the public meeting or through 5 p.m. June 12 for mountain lion hunting seasons, damage claims and AIS regulation and through 5 p.m. June 19 for wolf hunting seasons through the online comment form or by mail to Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Regulations 3030 Energy Lane Casper, WY 82604.

Suicide prevention training with Cynthia Cloud @ Sheridan Senior Center

SHERIDAN — Wyoming State Auditor Cynthia Cloud will give the keynote address at the Light in the Darkness suicide prevention presentation and training Wednesday.

Cloud lost her son to suicide in 2016.

Universal Language of Birds @ Ucross Foundation

UCROSS — For bird lovers and art lovers alike, Saturday will provide an opportunity to experience a combination of the two, through a series of events at the Ucross Foundation Art Gallery. 

To celebrate the opening of the exhibition “The Universal Language of Birds” by Christina Baal, a day of festivities will take place, building connections between people, art, science, birds and all of the natural world.

Events will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include a morning talk on birding and nature journaling, and guided bird walks on the Ucross Ranch, culminating with an artist’s talk and gallery reception starting at noon.

Dr. Jackie Canterbury, President of Bighorn Audubon, will join Christina Baal to lead the day’s activities.

Inspired by Baal’s dedication to public engagement, the exhibition will also include bird-related art submitted by the local community, such as a painting by Worland artist Victoria Bales, and from the national Ucross community, such as poems by Pittsburgh poet and Ucross fellow J.C. Todd.

The community art will also be catalogued online at www.drawingtenthousandbirds.com, a website created by Baal intended to develop a community of “citizen artists.”

The following is the schedule of events:

• 9 a.m. — doors open at the Ucross Art Gallery

• 9:30-10 a.m., presentation by Baal and Canterbury, with tips on birding and nature journaling

• 10 a.m. to noon — Guided bird walks led by Baal and Canterbury, starting from Big Red 

• Noon — gallery reception begins

• 1 p.m. — Artist talk by Baal

• 3 p.m. — reception concludes

Morning participants will receive nature journals and a copies of “Recognizing 10 Common Birds of Ucross and Wyoming,” created by Baal for the event. Participants should wear weather appropriate attire and binoculars are recommended (a few will be on hand for guest use).

The Ucross Foundation Art Gallery is located one-half mile east of the intersection of Highways 14 and 16 East in Ucross.

Wyoming Board of Education meeting @ Sheridan County School District 2

SHERIDAN — The Wyoming State Board of Education will conduct a one-day meeting in Sheridan on June 22. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. at the Sheridan County School District 2 central office, located at 201 N. Connor St. 

The SBE will hear reports from SBE coordinator Dr. Thomas Sachse, Wyoming Department of Education liaison Lisa Weigel and WDE staff about accreditation, an update on Every Student Succeeds Act, the Professional Judgment Panel and Advisory Committee, JEIC reports, alternative schedule and school performance ratings, and an update on Chapters 6, 10, and 31.

The board will also hear updates from SBE committees and will take action on recommendations.

Following the meeting, the WDE will conduct a community input meeting on Wyoming’s Social Studies Content and Performance Standards as they pertain to Wyoming’s new “American Indian education program” legislation. These meetings will inform the public of the standards review process and gather public input to be shared with the Social Studies Standards Review Committee for their consideration prior to their work.

A presentation will discuss House Enrolled Act 119 and the process to ensure the cultural heritage, history and contemporary contributions of American Indians are addressed in the review of the Social Studies Standards.

Participants will be asked to respond to two questions:

• Why is it important for everyone to learn about American Indians?

• What do you want the review committee to know about the cultural heritage, history, and contemporary contributions of American Indians as they review the Social Studies Standards?

The community input meeting will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the SCSD2 central office. 

Those unable to attend can also respond online through Sept. 8.

SHERIDAN — The Model A and Pioneer Car Club of Sheridan and Johnson counties will cruise to the Ranch at Ucross Sunday for lunch.

Those in Buffalo will meet at the Big Horn Tire parking lot at 11 a.m. Those in Sheridan will meet at the Maverick on the south side of Sheridan at 11 a.m.

9/11 remembrance ceremony @ Sheridan Fire-Rescue

SHERIDAN — Sheridan Fire-Rescue will host a remembrance ceremony Sept. 11 to honor those lost in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and the crash site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

All local law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and the public are invited to the event, which will take place at the SFR station.

The ceremony will begin at 7:50 a.m. It will include ringing of the LaFrance bell at the time the south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. A moment of silence will follow along with the release of doves, an invocation and bag pipe performance.

SFR is located at 151 S. Scott St.
