SMH to host Christmas Trees of Love open house Sunday @ Sheridan Memorial Hospital
Dec 4 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

SHERIDAN — The Auxiliary of Sheridan Memorial Hospital will host the Christmas Trees of Love open house on Sunday from 4-5 p.m.

The trees will be lit at 5 pm. Refreshments will be served.

The trees provide residents the opportunity to dedicate a light in honor or memory of a friend or family member. White lights memorialize a deceased loved one; green lights honor a relative or friend; and red lights honor a child or a pet.

“Lights can be dedicated to a loved one with a donation of $5 or more any time until Dec. 31. However, donations that are received after the tree lighting may not be acknowledged until after the first of the year,” said Joan Kalasinsky, chairperson for the Trees of Love project.

The $5 donation will include a card sent to the honoree or the family informing them of the dedication from the Auxiliary. The honoree’s name is then inscribed in the Book of Love, which will be on display in the hospital lobby during the holidays.

Application forms are available at the hospital’s reception desk and on the hospital’s website at www.sheridanhospital.org.

Explore history of Clean Air Act at SC Wednesday @ Sheridan College
Dec 7 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College Museum of Discovery will host a lecture on “Clean Air — Then and Now: The Role of Catalysts and Computers” on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

The lecture will take a retrospective look at the reasons for the enactment of the 1970 Clean Air Act, which led to the use of catalytic converters as standard equipment on all American cars produced since 1974.

Today, exhaust emissions from our cars are 98 percent lower than they were in the early 1970s. Which would not have been possible without the co-development of catalyst and computer science. The lecture will include examples of how the automotive industry could match scientific advances in chemistry and electronics to accomplish what was thought impossible 40 years ago. Robert McDowell will present the lecture.

McDowell graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Villanova University while working in the research and development group of Johnson Matthey, the largest automotive catalyst company. He was part of the team that brought the first commercial three-way catalyst from concept into production and has manufactured emission control catalyst on four continents. He currently advises a diverse set of clients working in the R&D and prototyping areas, including lithium ion batteries, biofuels, precious metal recycling and emission control catalysts.
