The Bills to perform at Mars Theater @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The Bills will perform at the Mars Theater at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Bills have earned two previous JUNO nominations and multiple Western Canadian Music Awards. They are known for their acoustic talents in the folk and roots genre.

WYO Theater to host ‘Live from The Met’ @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The WYO Theater will present Gounod’s “Romeo and Juliette” as part of its The Metropolitan Opera: Live in High Definition series at 10:55 a.m. Saturday.

As part of its efforts to reinvigorate opera and reach out to a broader public, The Metropolitan Opera in New York launched the series of opera performances transmitted live to movie theaters and other venues around the world.

Forbes to perform at Whitney Center for the Arts @ Whitney Center for the Arts is located at Sheridan College

SHERIDAN — Mike Forbes will perform with Eric Jenkins in a recital Friday at the Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College.

The show will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Forbes, who currently lives near Madison, Wisconsin, will perform on the tuba, while Jenkins will play the piano.

Forbes has two solo albums. He began his career with the U.S. Army Band and subsequently served on the music faculty at universities along the East Coast and in the Midwest.

SAGE to host 7th annual National Juried Art Show @ Sagebrush Community Art Center’s new space

SHERIDAN — Sheridan Artists Guild Et al will host its seventh annual National Juried Art Show in February and has put out a call for art to be featured in the show.

Heather Plank will serve as the juror for the first show in the guild’s new space downtown.

Plank has a bachelor’s degree in printmaking from the University of Oregon and established the residency program and gallery at the Ucross Foundation, among other accomplishments and training.

The show will open Feb. 2 and a reception and awards event will take place that day from 5-7 p.m. at the Sagebrush Community Art Center’s new space at 21 W. Brundage St.

Brubeck Brothers to perform at Whitney Center for the Arts @ Sheridan College

SHERIDAN — The Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College will welcome the jazz ensemble, The Brubeck Brothers Quartet on Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Sons of jazz legend, Dave Brubeck, Chris and Dan Brubeck have been making music together their entire lives. They cut their first record together in 1966 — nearly a half century ago. They’ve subsequently played a variety of styles in a number of different groups, including with their father and with their own Brubeck Brothers Quartet. 

Guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb complete the dynamic quartet.

Ken Lavigne to perform at the WYO @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — Singer Ken Lavigne will perform at the WYO Theater Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. 

Joined by a two-piece ensemble, Lavigne takes his audience on a journey, retelling his personal campaign to sing at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops. Told with songs and stories, Lavigne embodies the spirit of the underdog.

Brinton to display student art in February @ Brinton Museum

BIG HORN — The Brinton Museum will again partner with local elementary schools to present the second annual All-Schools Fifth-Grade Student Art Show, featuring original art by fifth-grade students from nine schools throughout Sheridan and Johnson counties. 

The student art show opens in the Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Building’s Jacomien Mars Reception Gallery on Thursday. A reception for the artists will take place Friday from 5:30-7:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public. 

Admission to the student art exhibit through Feb. 17 is free for students and teachers.

The All-Schools Fifth-Grade Student Art Show offers fifth-graders the unique opportunity to showcase their artistic talents in a professional, museum setting and share their classroom art projects with the public. 

“We are happy to again highlight art by young students in a special show at The Brinton Museum,” Museum Director Kenneth Schuster said in a press release. “This event gives students the chance to experience first-hand how a fine art museum functions as a valuable resource to the community, and that museums are a great place to see great art!” 

The All-Schools Fifth-Grade Student Art Show is available to guests through Feb. 17.

SC to host auditions for music scholarships Feb. 11 @ Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College Music Department will hold music scholarship auditions on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College.

SC offers scholarships for students studying music at three levels: Presto (full tuition plus room and board); Vivace (full tuition); and Allegro (partial tuition). The scholarship awards cover two full years at SC. Additionally, students from non-music disciplines may apply for the Allegro scholarship.

Students wishing to pursue priority admission must audition on Feb. 11. Students may also audition after Feb. 11 by appointment only.

American Idol winner to perform at WYO @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The winner of the 2006 season of American Idol, Taylor Hicks, will perform at the WYO Theater on Tuesday.

The show is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for adults cost $32. The cost is $29.50 for seniors and military members and $26.50 for students.

SC to host father, daughter art exhibit, reception @ Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College

SHERIDAN — Internationally-renowned artist Theodore Waddell, who has gifted the college his entire print collection, printing press and materials to Sheridan College, will give a presentation with his daughter, local artist Arin Waddell, on Feb. 16 from 5-7 p.m.  

Theodore Waddell most often paints freely-rendered range animals roaming the vast plains of eastern Montana. He is known for expressionist animal and landscape painting and sculpture. Waddell was born in Laurel, Montana, and studied at the Brooklyn Museum Art School; Eastern Montana College; and Wayne State University, Detroit (MFA, 1968). He taught at the University of Montana from 1968 to 1976 and has since been a full-time artist and rancher.  He has had more than 90 one-man exhibitions, including a major survey at the Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis. Waddell’s work has been singled out in reviews in the Washington Post and The New York Times, and was the subject of a Newsweek article. 

The Waddells will work with Sheridan area high school students on Feb. 15 and Sheridan College students on Feb. 16. 

On Feb. 16, from 5-7 p.m., the Whitney Center for the Arts will host an opening artist reception for Theodore Waddell and Arin Waddell. Both of their works will be on display in their latest exhibition: Waddell + Waddell. This reception is free and open to the public. The public is welcome to attend, view the works and meet the artists. 

Waddell + Waddell is on display through March 10.

SC to host Gresl in concert Friday @ Sheridan College

SHERIDAN — Sheridan College will host Jason Gresl at the Whitney Center for the Arts Concert Hall on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Gresl, a clarinetist, has performed in a variety of orchestral and chamber music settings. By day, he stays busy as the clarinet instructor and guest lecturer at Andrews University, Lake Michigan College and Sheridan College. By night, he can be found performing contemporary classical concerts with his duo Claricello (www.claricello.com), freelancing in various Michiana orchestras, acting on the community theatre stage and exploring multidisciplinary arts in his ensemble.

WYO Theater to host ‘Artrageous’ show @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — While a high-energy, fast-paced, color-enhanced performance sounds like something geared toward children, both WYO Theater executive director Erin Butler and the show’s performers are quick to correct that misconception.

Artrageous — an interactive art and music experience — includes music, dancing and a form of quick-drawing.

“It’s geared toward kids in the sense that we want to expose students and children to multiple forms of art happening at the same time and (show them) that art doesn’t have to be one thing or the other,” Butler said. “But the show really appeals to a wider audience.”

Butler explained that the music included in the shows will be familiar to adults and noted that the art is very professional.

“So kids will like it because it’s fun, loud and high-energy,” Butler said, “but adults will like it because of the artistry.”

John deWolf said Artrageous is comprised of a team of friends that have been performing together in one form or another since the 1980s. 

“One of the ways this all makes sense is that, for instance, we might do a song from the 1950s and combine that with a live action painting of an icon from the 1950s — singing, dancing and a 6-by-6 painting of Elvis appears in a matter of minutes,” deWolf said.

He said the show is “gently” engaging and the group works to ease folks into the interactive parts of the show. They do a meet and greet as attendees come into the lobby and engage the audience throughout the show in a safe, fun way. 

“They love the opportunity to hop up on stage with us,” deWolf said. 

Both Butler and deWolf said the show is different from what most people have seen.

“I’ve never seen anything like it — ever; it’s really unique,” Butler said.

deWolf said the group has performed in Wyoming in other forms, but this is the first time Artrageous will come to Sheridan County.

Luminous Brewhouse to host Martin Sexton @ Luminous Brewhouse

SHERIDAN — Luminous Brewhouse will host musician Martin Sexton for a one-night addition to his national tour at 7 p.m. Tuesday. 

Sexton will extend his 2017 tour in support of his ninth studio release, “Mixtape of the Open Road.” 

“We have a great space, and fill a niche in Sheridan,” Luminous owner Seth Orr said.

“We are excited to host Martin Sexton,” he continued. “Sharing music like this with the Sheridan community is our way of saying thank you to our patrons — and to the whole town.”

Syracuse native Sexton got his start singing in the streets and subways of Boston in the early ‘90s. He has headlined venues from The Fillmore to Carnegie Hall and his songs have appeared in television series such as “Scrubs,” “Parenthood” and “Masters of Sex” as well as numerous films.

WYO Theater to host St. Patrick’s Day celebration @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The WYO Theater will host a St. Patrick’s Day celebration with Danú on March 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Hailing from Ireland, Danú is one of the leading traditional Irish ensembles of today. The band formed in 1995 as part of Ireland’s delegation to Lorient Inter-Celtic Festival in Brittany, France.

Danú takes its audiences on a musical journey to their native Ireland, offering a moving and memorable concert experience.

Muir Quartet to perform at SC @ Sheridan College

SHERIDAN — The Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College will host the award-winning string quartet, The Muir String Quartet, on March 8 at 7:30 p.m. The program includes works by Mozart, Dvoák and Schulhoff.

Now in its 38th season, the Muir String Quartet has long been acknowledged as one of the world’s most powerful and insightful ensembles, distinguishing itself among audiences and critics.

The Muir Quartet will be joined by flutist, Carol Wincenc. Wincenc is the recipient of the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Flute Association and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Arts and Letters. She recently celebrated her 25th anniversary as a faculty member at The Juilliard School.

The Muir Quartet with Wincenc will also present a masterclass at 1 p.m. The masterclass is free and open to the public.

St. John’s University men’s chorus to perform at Holy Name @ Holy Name Catholic Church

Performance dates for the show will be May 12-14, May 19-21, and May 26-28 in the Mars Theater.

Buzz Cason, friends to perform at WYO Theater @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — Buzz Cason, the producer of Buddy Holly’s band The Crickets and the founder of Nashville’s first rock and roll band, will perform at the WYO Theater to benefit Project Schoolhouse on Wednesday.

The show will begin at 6 p.m. 

Cason has had hit songs with U2, Pearl Jam, Jimmy Buffet and The Beatles. He will be joined by Robert Cline Jr., Sean Devine, Tab Barker and Jon and Cody Quarterman to celebrate and raise funds for the nonprofit Project Schoolhouse, which is an international organization that focuses on education, clean water and sanitation in rural Nicaraguan communities.

Tickets for the event cost $18.50 per person. Tickets are general admission.
