Build a better world @ Sheridan County libraries

SHERIDAN — Sheridan area children, teens and adults are invited to participate in “Build a Better World,” Sheridan County libraries’ 2017 building-themed summer reading program.

The library encourages summer reading for entertainment and because it is important for young readers to keep reading while on summer break from school in order to maintain their reading skills. Numerous studies show that students often significantly lose their reading skill level during the summer if they do not read regularly.

The summer reading program this year runs through July 27.

The children’s library will host weekly story times; programs and activities will be held in the children’s library, with special guests from the community attending the preschool story time each week.

A new program will also be offered this year for youth entering fifth grade and up. The sessions will be held on Tuesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. and will feature small building and crafting projects that participants can take home.

Adults and young adults wanting to participate in the summer reading program may pick up a punch card at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library circulation desk. For each book or other item checked out, the reader will receive one punch on the card. When the punches are complete on a card, the patron may choose a prize and start a new punch card.

The completed punch cards, with the name and phone number of the participants, are then entered into monthly drawings for larger prizes and for the grand finale prize at the end of the summer. The grand finale prize this year for adults and young adults will be $100 in Chamber Bucks.

The Story, Clearmont and Tongue River branch libraries are also holding summer reading programs with varying start dates and diverse program offerings. Contact the individual libraries for more details.

Trap Shoot @ Sheridan County Sportsmen’s Association
Jun 28 – Jul 2 all-day

SHERIDAN — The 102nd annual Wyoming State Trap Shoot will take place Wednesday through Sunday at the Sheridan County Sportsmen’s Association.

Hundreds of shooters are expected to compete.

Each day of activities will begin at approximately 8 a.m.

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library will offer activities and welcome guests for preschool story time held each Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Activities will include stories, songs and fun.

The following is the schedule for the summer program.

• June 28 — guests from Rocky Mountain Ambulance • July 5 — come meet a therapy dog

• July 12 — guest police officer Annalisa Jones with her police car

• July 19 — guests from the Army National Guard, bring something big

• July 26 — A guest cowboy or cowgirl with a horse and trailer

Fall kick-off events

SHERIDAN — KidsLife will host a series of fall family kick-off events in the next two weeks. 

Food and drinks will be provided at the events, to which families are encouraged to attend to learn what KidsLife has in store for the school year.

KidsLife offers weekly clubs, social activities, service projects, small group Bible studies and more for children in grades three through 12.

The nonprofit will host the following events:

• Aug. 29 — 6-8 p.m. at the Barn in Big Horn

• Aug. 30 — 6-8 p.m. at the Tongue River Valley Community Center

• Sept. 7 — 6-8 p.m. at the KidsLife House

Akcita Win meeting @ Ole's Pizza

SHERIDAN — The next Akcita Win monthly meeting will take place at Ole’s Pizza on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.
The guest speaker will be Kathy Kay from the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter. The group will have a “pet shower” with those attending bringing toys, treats, dog collars, bleach, laundry detergent or anything they can think of to donate to the shelter.
Akcita Win is a women’s club that meets once a month and is open to the public, however reservations need to be called to Connie Goodwin at 751-2550.

Flying Cowboys fly-in

SHERIDAN — The Flying Cowboys will host the annual fly-in Friday and Saturday at the Sheridan County Sportsman’s Club.

The fly-in of remote-controlled planes will include pilots from five states with 200 planes.
