WWA hosts hike in Devil’s Canyon

SHERIDAN — For the next event in a series of outings celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the 30th anniversary of the Wyoming Wilderness Act of 1984, the Wyoming Wilderness Association will host a free hike in Devil’s Canyon Roadless Area. On Saturday, retired DEQ ecologist Jack Smith will lead hikers along the rim of Devil’s Canyon into Bucking Mule Basin. SHERIDAN— Senator Mike Enzi, and his wife Diana, are hosting ice cream socials in 21 communities over the next three weeks. The events are free and open to the public. Senator Enzi will be Sheridan Sunday, August 17. Final Tidbit Tuesdays August 19 @ Sheridan County Museum

SHERIDAN — The next and final offering of the “Tidbit Tuesday” educational program at the Sheridan County Museum will be held on Tuesday. The program gives children and their families an opportunity to explore history together from 10 a.m. to noon every other Tuesday throughout the summer. The events are free and open to all, but space is limited to 24 children so pre-registration is requested. For more information or to register call 675-1150. Final Concert in the park August 19 @ Kendrick Park

SHERIDAN — The next and final Concert in the Park will be held Tuesday and will feature the Zac Hacker Band from Nashville. From 7:30-9 p.m. in the Kendrick Park Bandshell. Fitness focus of Parkfit @ Washington Park

SHERIDAN — EMIT Technologies, the Recreation District and the Wellness Council have partnered to present ParkFit 2014.

Every Wednesday throughout the summer from 12:10-12:50 p.m. a free fitness class will be offered at one of the local parks.

The next session will be fitness by the YMCA at Washington Park.

All members of the community are invited to these free events.

Neuroscience Educator lecture @ Whitney Presentation Hall/Sheridan College

SHERIDAN—Affective neuroscience researcher and educator Mary Helen Immordino-Yang present a talk at Sheridan College. Titled “Me, my “self” and you: Neurobiology of self and social emotion in learning”, the lecture will be on Wednesday, August 20 at 7 p.m in the Whitney Presentation Hall. Immordino-Yang was named a “Rising Star” by the Association of Psychological Science in 2011 and was the inaugural recipient of the Award for Transforming Education through Neuroscience. This event has been made possible by a partnership between Sheridan College Insight Series, Sheridan School Districts #1 & #2, the Kibbee Foundation for Children, The Homer & Mildred Scott Foundation. ASIST classes return to Sheridan @ Wyoming Mental Health

SHERIDAN— Registration is now open for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) class to be held on Thursday and Friday, August 21 and 22, from 8:15 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Northern Wyoming Mental Health offices, 1701 W. Fifth St.

The two-day ASIST class is designed to supplement a caregiver’s abilities to assist an at risk person. This class is free, however, space is limited so please contact Sydney Rowe at 620-9995 or email srowe@pmowyo.org.

Farmer’s Market and Third Thursday Street Fest @ Grinnell Street Plaza

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Farmers Market will be moved farther up Grinnell Street this Thursday, in front of The Sheridan Press, to celebrate the Third Thursday Street Festival.

From 5-7 p.m. vendors will sell produce, arts and crafts and more as live music, children’s activities, demonstrations and nonprofit booths are hosted.

Rockin Jake will perform from 5:30 p.m.-9 p.m. on the Main Stage and Canary Joe will perform at the same time on Loucks and Main Street.

Final Flavor of the Week Thursday @ Kula Space

SHERIDAN — In celebration of its fourth anniversary, the Kula Space will host “Flavor of the Week,” a weekly free class on Thursdays this summer at 5:30 p.m.

Some of the free classes will request optional donations to support a local cause and suggestions of local causes to support are welcome.

This week’s class will be the final one of the summer and will feature yoga with Tracey.

Big Sky Dowser’s Convention @ Moose Lodge

BILLINGS— The Big Sky Dowser will meet at its 37th annual convention from Aug. 23-24 at the Moose Lodge in Billings, Mont.

Dowsing is a type of divination employed in attempts to locate ground water, buried metals or ores, gemstones, oil and many other objects and materials without the use of scientific apparatus.

Come to the convention and learn about dowsing and see it demonstrated and learn the technique. The special presenter will be Big Sky Dowser Charter Member Vern Bandy who will demonstrate dowsing rods he personally designed.

The Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter has been selected to receive renovation, and needs volunteers to help finish the project.

The renovations will begin Aug. 23 and 24 at 9 a.m.

Sheridan Community Blood Drive @ Best Western Sheridan Center

SHERIDAN— The Sheridan Community Blood Drive will be on Monday from Noon – 6 p.m. and Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The blood drive will take place in the ballroom at the Best Western Sheridan Center, 612 Main St. There is an emergency need for the O negative and O positive blood types.

This workshop will be in room 203 in the Whitney Building and is free and open to Sheridan College students.

Final WWA hike up Bonneville Pass

On Saturday, hikers will enjoy their lunch while overlooking volcanic cliffs and scenic meadow.s

Bring a picnic lunch and plan to spend time discussing the anniversary of wilderness areas. The hike will be approximately six miles roundtrip. For more information or to register call the WWA at 672-2751 or email carolyn@wildwyo.org.

SHERIDAN— Blacktooth Brewing will host a non-profit event on Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. For every pint sold, one dollar is donated to the Matthew Perkins Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Matthew Perkins Memorial Scholarship Fund is money that helps to subsidize educational travel opportunities for Sheridan High School and Fort McKenzie High School students. 50/50 tickets will be sold and Thrivent Builds will provide free hotdogs. BIG HORN— Professional polo announcer and young horse trainer Gus Whitelaw will be at the Brinton Barn in Big Horn Wednesday.

At 10 a.m. Whitelaw will give a horse demonstration and talk about training a young horse, getting a polo horse used to “traffic,” the polo ball, field work and other horse-related topics.
