‘Orphan Trains’ presentation @ Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library

SHERIDAN—Few people today know much about the largest child migration in history. Between 1854 and 1929 more than 250,000 orphans and unwanted children were taken out of New York City and given away at train stations across America. Organized by Rev. Charles Brace to rid New York City of homeless street children and provide them with a chance to find new homes, this nearly 80 year experiment in child migration is filled with horror stories and happy endings. Sheridan Fulmer Library will host “Riders on the Orphan Trains”, the official outreach program of the National Orphan Train Complex, at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Inner Circle. Community Music Courses @ Sheridan College in Buffalo

SHERIDAN — Sheridan College will hold three community music courses this fall taught by local musician Lynn Young. Young will offer “Let’s pick – playing handmade music with friends,” on Wednesday from 6:30-9 p.m. The cost is $35. Participants are encouraged to bring a fiddle, guitar, banjo, bass or mandolin, or just come sing and have fun.

“Roots of country music – A listening history” is a two-evening course, on Oct. 27 and Oct. 29, from 6:30-9 p.m. both nights. The cost is $35. Participants will learn about the origins of country music and listen to vintage recordings and live performances of local musicians.

Young’s final course, “All about stringed instruments,” will be held Nov. 12, from 6:30-9 p.m. The cost is $20. Participants are encouraged to bring their instruments to learn about maintenance and value, as well as how to change strings and tune instruments.

Participants who register for all three will receive a $10 discount. The courses will be offered at the Sheridan College in Johnson County campus in Buffalo.

Also, singer/songwriter David Stewart will offer “The art of song writing,” on Tuesday in Buffalo from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $30. Participants will learn about publishing and crafting a song, as well as collaborative songwriting efforts. To register or learn more about the community education program, call 674-6446, ext. 6000.

Big Horn High School choir concert @ Big Horn High School auditorium

BIG HORN — The Big Horn High School choir will present a fall concert on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the BHHS auditorium.

Choir selections will include “A Tribute To the Armed Forces,” arranged by Lloyd Larson, “Ashokan Farewell,” arranged by Carole Stephens, “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Sing, Sing, Sing,” arranged by Tom Anderson, “Home,” arranged by Greg Gilpin, and “One Day More,” arranged by Mark Brymer.

As an added feature, a sneak peak of the BHHS Drama Club production will be included in the concert. The cast will present one scene of the play “Just A Little Crazy” by Renee Rebman. The full production of the play is set for 7 p.m. on Nov. 13-14 in the BHHS auditorium.

International Guitar Night @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — International Guitar Night will come to the WYO Theater on Wednesday beginning at 7:30 p.m.

For the 2015 North American tour, IGN founder Brian Gore will be joined by classical innovator and fellow Californian Andrew York, Brazilian jazz master Diego Figueiredo and contemporary Iranian-Canadian steel string prodigy Maneli Jamal.

Jazz Ambassadors concert @ The WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The Jazz Ambassadors — the official touring band of the U.S. Army — will perform at the WYO Theater at 7:30 p.m. March 31.

The free concert will feature the 19-member ensemble formed in 1969.

Concerts by the Jazz Ambassadors are designed to entertain all types of audiences. Custom compositions and arrangements will highlight the group’s talent and soloists.

The band’s repertoire includes big band swing, bebop, Latin, contemporary jazz, standards, popular tunes, Dixieland, vocals and patriotic selections.

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School Symphony and Baroque orchestras will perform April 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s Sue Henry Auditorium.

The Baroque Orchestra will perform pieces by Mozart and Brahms and the Symphony Orchestra will perform pieces by Weber, Elgar and Lalo. Jacob Jahiel will be featured as a soloist.

In addition, Pippin Robison will perform Stamitz’s violin concerto in G and Mariah Grant will perform a violin concerto in G by Haydn.

Land’s End concert @ First Baptist Church

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Arts Council in collaboration with the First Baptist Church will host a concert by Land’s End on April 2 at the church.

Land’s End is Canada’s premier classical chamber ensemble and will be joined by WYO Theater Executive Director Gerard Gibbs on oboe and Marcin Swoboda on viola.

A pre-concert talk will begin at 6 p.m. and the concert will start at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and military and $5 for students.

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School choirs will perform a concert for the community at 7 p.m. April 7 in the Sheridan High School Sue Henry Auditorium.

The concert will feature the songs the four choirs will be taking to the upcoming Northeast District Festival to be held April 30 in Gillette.

The Honor Choir will sing a Mozart piece; Treblemakers, the all-girl choir, and Spectrum, a co-ed choir, will both sing several songs they performed at the jazz festival in Casper.

The SHS mixed choir will also perform, and the evening will also feature several small ensembles.

Choir teacher Ashley Lecholat said her choirs work all year to develop the needed techniques to master the mature pieces that will be featured at the concert.

The concert will last approximately one hour and is free and open to the public.

UNPLUG: Banana Slug String Band and Great Elk Tour @ Mars Black Box Theater at the WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — Unplug Week will kick off May 18 with an offering that is new this year, an evening at the WYO Theater aimed at educating children in a fun way.

The Banana Slug String Band — musicians, songwriters and educators who blend music, theater, puppetry and audience participation to create a learning environment for kids — will perform a free concert from 6-8 p.m. May 18 in the Mars Black Box Theater.

Claire Hobbs, communications and development associate with the SCLT, said the group teaches many different science and environmentally focused lessons ranging from water cycles to recycling in a fun and interactive way.

Just prior, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s traveling “Great Elk Tour” conservation education exhibit will be open from 4-6 p.m. displaying world-class taxidermy as a way for children to better understand the habitat of the animals and how conserving them ensures our hunting heritage.
