Local libraries to host book discussions through spring @ Fulmer Library
May 9 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

SHERIDAN — The annual Claire Yorks Spring Book Discussion Series will begin in January at Sheridan County libraries. Story Branch and Tongue River Branch libraries will offer the series “Immigration: On Becoming an American” and Sheridan Fulmer Library will offer “Growing Up in the West.” 

Katie Curtiss will lead discussions at Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library and Norleen Healy will lead at Story and Tongue River branches.

Story Branch Library and Tongue River Branch Library will start their discussions in January and Sheridan Fulmer will start its discussions in February. Books are available now at the front desk of each library.

Participants can attend any or all sessions and can also attend sessions at different libraries if they choose. There is no charge for these programs and new participants are welcome.

The schedule for the Fulmer Library:

• Feb. 14 – “English Creek” at 6:30 p.m.

• March 14 – “The Meadow” at 6:30 p.m.

• April 11 – “The Round House” at 6:30 p.m.

• May 9 – “Cowboys and East Indians” at 6:30 p.m.

• Jan. 30 – “The Namesake” at 6:30 p.m.

The Claire Yorks Reading and Discussion series is funded by an endowment established at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library. Yorks was born in Sheridan to Leroy and Mildred Calkins.

She graduated from high school in Sheridan and moved to Seattle to work in the aircraft industry in World War II. There she met and married her husband, Samuel Yorks.

She finished college and became a social worker in Portland.

When she retired in 1982, the Yorks moved to Sheridan where they were involved community volunteers. Sam Yorks was the first moderator of adult reading and discussion groups at the Fulmer Library in Sheridan.

Event to focus on Sheridan Brewery, Prohibition @ Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library

SHERIDAN — The next round of Conversations in History presented by Helen Laumann and the Sheridan County Historical Society will focus on the Sheridan Brewery and Prohibition.

The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library.

The event is free and open to the public.

The library is located at 335 W. Alger St.

Sheridan County Youth Chorale to perform Wednesday @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Children’s and Youth Chorale will perform with the Sagebrush Folk Dancers on Wednesday at the WYO Theater.

The show, entitled “Turn the World Around,” will feature songs celebrating the sights and sounds from around the world. The dancers will offer traditional dances from around the world.

Tickets for the event are $5 for adults, seniors and students. Children age 12 and under get in for $3 apiece.

The WYO Theater is located at 42 N. Main St.

Dementia Friendly Wyoming to launch campaign with kick-off event @ The SMH offices downtown

SHERIDAN — Dementia Friendly Wyoming will kick off an educational program for Sheridan businesses and the community from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sheridan Memorial Hospital offices downtown.

Twelve volunteers are trained and ready to make presentations to businesses throughout Sheridan. Attend this event to learn more about the business training and sign up for a session. Presentations for management and employees will be offered in 30 minute to one-hour sessions.

More than 5.4 million people are living with dementia in the U.S. One in two households will be affected in the next 10 years. Businesses have customers living with dementia, often accompanied by their care partners. Businesses may also have employees who are caring for someone with dementia. Organizers of the training say supporting people affected by dementia is good business.

This campaign will help businesses recognize the signs of dementia, learn communication skills and know how to identify resources.

Foster Grandparents of the Rockies to host ice cream social @ YMCA

SHERIDAN — Foster Grandparents of the Rockies will host an ice cream social and informational session Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the YMCA.

The nonprofit goes into schools and helps students having academic, social or emotional difficulty. They work a minimum of 20 hours per week with no cost to the schools.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the program is encouraged to attend the informational session.

Veterans March on America set for Saturday @ Grinnell Plaza.

SHERIDAN — A Veterans March on America will take place in Sheridan beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Organizers said the march will not be politically partisan, violent, discriminating or divisive. It is meant to raise awareness of the many challenges veterans face each day.

The march will begin at Grinnell Plaza.

Safe Kids Sheridan County, hospital to host Safe Kids Day @ SMH’s downtown offices

SHERIDAN — Sheridan Memorial Hospital and Safe Kids Sheridan County will celebrate Safe Kids Day Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Safe Kids Day celebrates kids and helps families take action to make every kid a safe kid. The day will include all kinds of activities and games with opportunities to win prizes. Sheridan Fire-Rescue will have a fire truck on site and other entities will have hands-on displays.

A variety of activities will also be set up to help families learn safety tips for bikes, water, pedestrians, car seats, medications and more.

The event will take place at SMH’s downtown offices, located at 61 S. Gould St.

Museum to host Tidbit Saturday @ The Sheridan County Museum

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Historical Society and Museum will host the next round of Tidbit Saturday events this weekend.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with programs for Armed Forces Day at the museum. Tidbit programs are for children ages 4-10 and combine hands-on activities with historical lessons. Guests for this weekend’s event include the Wyoming Army National Guard and Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site.

The program is free, but sign-ups are requested by calling 675-1150.

Arthritis Support Network to launch @ The Rock Church

SHERIDAN — A new Arthritis Support Network will launch in Sheridan with an event Saturday from 1-2:30 p.m. at The Rock Church.

The network will provide help and support to adults living with all types of arthritis and rheumatic diseases. The group aims to offer connections, education and empowerment.

SHS band concert @ Sheridan High School

The concert will be the last for the band of the 2016-2017 school year.

Suicide prevention training with Cynthia Cloud @ Sheridan Senior Center

SHERIDAN — Wyoming State Auditor Cynthia Cloud will give the keynote address at the Light in the Darkness suicide prevention presentation and training Wednesday.

Cloud lost her son to suicide in 2016.

Dinner will be provided at the event set for 6-8 p.m. at the Sheridan Senior Center.

Tidbit Tuesday @ Sheridan County Museum

The event, set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, will focus on Clearmont and the town’s 125th anniversary.

Clearmont Mayor Chris Schock will be the special guest presenter.

Greenwings outdoor event

SHERIDAN — The Greenwings outdoor event will take place Saturday, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. to at the Sheridan County Sportsman Association.

The free event is meant for children ages 6-17 years old. 

Events throughout the day will include duck calling, gun safety, target shooting, archery, fly casting and first aid.

Parents are welcome and lunch will be provided.

Organizers of the event ask families to register their children in advance. Those interested in attending should call 673-0705 or 674-7515 to register.

The Sheridan County Sportsman Association is located at 89 Keystone Road.

Family FunFest @ Sheridan County YMCA soccer fields

SHERIDAN — A Family FunFest will benefit The Food Group in Sheridan Saturday from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. at the YMCA soccer fields on Jefferson Street.

The event will include bouncy houses, a climbing wall, burgers and hot dogs.

Donations will be accepted at the gates.

The Food Group works to keep the children of Sheridan County from being hungry.

SHERIDAN — Monday@theMuseum, the Sheridan County Museum’s summer program series will kick off next week.

Monday@theMuseum brings speakers from a range of disciplines to the museum. The program will begin at 10 a.m. on the museum’s porch. 

On Monday, Kim Ostermyer, manager of The Wyoming Room at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library, will be the guest presenter. Ostermyer will present, “The Sheridan Cemetery: Past, Present and Future.” The program is based on Ostermyer’s work related to Sheridan Municipal Cemetery records.

The event will take place in the VA’s auditorium. 

All veterans and those who care for or advocate for veterans in the community are invited to attend the event. VAHCS officials will provide a brief update and accept questions from those in attendance. 

Representatives from various VA programs will be available to share information and answer questions.

Wyoming Board of Education meeting @ Sheridan County School District 2

SHERIDAN — The Wyoming State Board of Education will conduct a one-day meeting in Sheridan on June 22. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. at the Sheridan County School District 2 central office, located at 201 N. Connor St. 

The SBE will hear reports from SBE coordinator Dr. Thomas Sachse, Wyoming Department of Education liaison Lisa Weigel and WDE staff about accreditation, an update on Every Student Succeeds Act, the Professional Judgment Panel and Advisory Committee, JEIC reports, alternative schedule and school performance ratings, and an update on Chapters 6, 10, and 31.

The board will also hear updates from SBE committees and will take action on recommendations.

Following the meeting, the WDE will conduct a community input meeting on Wyoming’s Social Studies Content and Performance Standards as they pertain to Wyoming’s new “American Indian education program” legislation. These meetings will inform the public of the standards review process and gather public input to be shared with the Social Studies Standards Review Committee for their consideration prior to their work.

A presentation will discuss House Enrolled Act 119 and the process to ensure the cultural heritage, history and contemporary contributions of American Indians are addressed in the review of the Social Studies Standards.

Participants will be asked to respond to two questions:

• Why is it important for everyone to learn about American Indians?

• What do you want the review committee to know about the cultural heritage, history, and contemporary contributions of American Indians as they review the Social Studies Standards?

The community input meeting will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the SCSD2 central office. 

Those unable to attend can also respond online through Sept. 8.

Battle Under the Bighorns @ Scott Park

DAYTON — The Tongue River Valley Community Center will host its annual three-on-three basketball tournament Saturday, with the first games starting at 8 a.m.

The Battle Under the Bighorns tournament is for children in grades four through eight and the cost is $100 per team.

Teams from Casper, Gillette, Sheridan and even Billings, Montana, compete in the event that will take place throughout the day at Scott Park in Dayton.
