Universal Language of Birds @ Ucross Foundation
Jun 10 @ 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

UCROSS — For bird lovers and art lovers alike, Saturday will provide an opportunity to experience a combination of the two, through a series of events at the Ucross Foundation Art Gallery.

To celebrate the opening of the exhibition “The Universal Language of Birds” by Christina Baal, a day of festivities will take place, building connections between people, art, science, birds and all of the natural world.

Events will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include a morning talk on birding and nature journaling, and guided bird walks on the Ucross Ranch, culminating with an artist’s talk and gallery reception starting at noon.

Dr. Jackie Canterbury, President of Bighorn Audubon, will join Christina Baal to lead the day’s activities.

Inspired by Baal’s dedication to public engagement, the exhibition will also include bird-related art submitted by the local community, such as a painting by Worland artist Victoria Bales, and from the national Ucross community, such as poems by Pittsburgh poet and Ucross fellow J.C. Todd.

The community art will also be catalogued online at www.drawingtenthousandbirds.com, a website created by Baal intended to develop a community of “citizen artists.”

The following is the schedule of events:

• 9 a.m. — doors open at the Ucross Art Gallery

• 9:30-10 a.m., presentation by Baal and Canterbury, with tips on birding and nature journaling

• 10 a.m. to noon — Guided bird walks led by Baal and Canterbury, starting from Big Red

• Noon — gallery reception begins

• 1 p.m. — Artist talk by Baal

• 3 p.m. — reception concludes

Morning participants will receive nature journals and a copies of “Recognizing 10 Common Birds of Ucross and Wyoming,” created by Baal for the event. Participants should wear weather appropriate attire and binoculars are recommended (a few will be on hand for guest use).

The Ucross Foundation Art Gallery is located one-half mile east of the intersection of Highways 14 and 16 East in Ucross.

Build a better world @ Sheridan County libraries
Jun 27 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

SHERIDAN — Sheridan area children, teens and adults are invited to participate in “Build a Better World,” Sheridan County libraries’ 2017 building-themed summer reading program.

The library encourages summer reading for entertainment and because it is important for young readers to keep reading while on summer break from school in order to maintain their reading skills. Numerous studies show that students often significantly lose their reading skill level during the summer if they do not read regularly.

The summer reading program this year runs through July 27.

The children’s library will host weekly story times; programs and activities will be held in the children’s library, with special guests from the community attending the preschool story time each week.

A new program will also be offered this year for youth entering fifth grade and up. The sessions will be held on Tuesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. and will feature small building and crafting projects that participants can take home.

Adults and young adults wanting to participate in the summer reading program may pick up a punch card at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library circulation desk. For each book or other item checked out, the reader will receive one punch on the card. When the punches are complete on a card, the patron may choose a prize and start a new punch card.

The completed punch cards, with the name and phone number of the participants, are then entered into monthly drawings for larger prizes and for the grand finale prize at the end of the summer. The grand finale prize this year for adults and young adults will be $100 in Chamber Bucks.

The Story, Clearmont and Tongue River branch libraries are also holding summer reading programs with varying start dates and diverse program offerings. Contact the individual libraries for more details.
