Tandem Production’s “Peter Pan Jr.” @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — Tandem Productions will present “Peter Pan Jr.” June 14-17 at the WYO Theater.
The play, based on the Disney film and J.M. Barrie’s enchanting play, will begin at 7:30 p.m. each night June 14-17.
Tandem Productions’ 23rd season will bring 57 children to the stage.
The cost to attend is $12 for adults and $10 for students.
The WYO Theater is located at 42 N. Main St.

“The Fantasticks” — CANCELED @ WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — The world’s longest-running musical, billed as “the perfect musical” by The Wall Street Journal, will be staged Tuesday in Sheridan.

Presented by the University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance, “The Fantasticks,” a family-friendly, funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, two meddling parents and a wall, will be performed at the WYO Theater at 7 p.m.

The UW production is free and open to the public.

Directed by UW Assistant Professor Kevin Inouye, “The Fantasticks” production is on a tour to four different Wyoming communities from June 18-21, and is sponsored by the UW Department of Theatre and Dance, in conjunction with UW Fine Arts Outreach.

The play is part of UW’s 64th annual Snowy Range Summer Theatre season; the production is being staged June 15-17 and June 23-24 at UW’s Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts.

“The Fantasticks” has enchanted audiences all over the world since Dwight Eisenhower’s presidency.

The WYO Theater is located at 42 N. Main St.

SHERIDAN — Karen McNenny will return to Sheridan this week for a number of events, including a community presentation set for 9 a.m. to noon Friday.

McNenny will help local groups learn to talk about their organizations so people want you to keep talking.

She’ll help you be ready when the next person asks, “What do you do?” You’ll be able to seize the opportunity and avoid fumbling for the right words.

The event will also help attendees develop the skills to speak effectively at the next networking social, public event or media opportunity. The cost of the presentation is $30 per person. It will take place at the Sheridan College Broadway Center, located at 245 Broadway St.

Antiracism series @ Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library

SHERIDAN — A local group calling itself Real Resistance Wyoming has organized a series of summer programs meant to combat racism.

Each of the events is free and open to the public. The final event in the series is set for Tuesday and will focus on contemporary voices. The group will discuss “Letter to My Son” by Ta-Nahisi Coates and read selections from Claudia Rankine’s “Citizen: An American Lyric.”

The discussion will take place at 6 p.m. in the Inner Circle of the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library.

Eclipse, full moon program

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Public Library System and Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site will host a series of programs on the upcoming solar eclipse and a viewing party for the full moon next week.

On Aug. 7, the program will begin at 3 p.m. at the Tongue River Branch Library in Ranchester. The program will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library and at 7:30 p.m. at the Story Branch Library.

At 8:30 p.m., the state historic site will host a full moon and night sky viewing party.

The programs will be led by Samantha Ogden, program coordinator for the NASA Space Grant Consortium in Laramie. Her programs will focus on the science of eclipse and how to safely view them.

Those planning to attend the viewing party at the fort are asked to bring a chair or blanket, binoculars and bug spray.

Auditions for gala @ Mars Theater

SHERIDAN — The WYO Theater will host auditions for its annual gala performance Thursday and Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the Mars Theater.

The gala production of “Sister Act” will take place Oct. 21, with encore performances Oct. 26-29.

Those planning to audition should be prepared to sing 32 bars of song to showcase their voice, do a script reading and move to music. An accompanist will be available.

Rehearsals for the show will begin the last week of August.

SHERIDAN — The Jentel Artist Residency Program will present this month’s residents in an event open to the public Tuesday from 5:30-7 p.m. at SAGE Community Arts.
Jentel Presents is a community outreach program that features visual presentations and readings by the visual artists and writers at the residency.
Presenters include figure drawer Bob Shay, of Lexington, Kentucky; fiction writer Chris Drangle, of Oakland, California; book artist Suze Woolf, of Seattle, Washington; collage artist Lani Asher, of San Francisco, California; novelist Adrienne Celt, of Tucson, Arizona; and painter Blanche Nettles Powers, of Savannah, Georgia.
The event is free and open to the public. SAGE Community Arts is located at 21 W. Brundage St.

After each evening performance and talkback, there will also be an after party at Weston Wineries.
Each show will be performed multiple times between Sept.7-17.
In addition, six plays will be read at sessions allowing writers to try out their new work.

SHERIDAN — As part of the three-day Harvest Moon Festival celebrating family, food and community, Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library and Sheridan Local Foods will host a tea social and public discussion on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Inner Circle.

During the program, the group will screen short, inspiring TED Talks on local food and agricultural topics and follow the videos with discussion of how to implement the ideas in local communities.

The program will begin at 6 p.m. with homemade herbal teas and locally-sourced snacks. The video portion of the program will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by discussion led by Donald Legerski. This program is free and open to all members of the public.

Attendees will experiment with developing characters, creating scenes and dialogue and writing strong narratives. By the end of the workshop, participants should have gained confidence in writing their own stories, writing techniques and sharing those stories.

Wohl is an experienced writing teacher who has published three volumes of poetry along with short stories and essays. She has taught writers from kindergarten to graduate school.

The cost to participate in the four-day workshop is $50 for seniors registered with the Senior Center and $75 for others. Supplies are included in the cost. 

Those planning to participate are asked to sign up by Sept. 11 by calling 672-2240.

The Sheridan Senior Center is located at 211 Smith St.

Portable Masterpieces @ The WYO Theater

SHERIDAN — Before the Internet and television, there was radio. Before radio was Vaudeville. The small orchestras of radio shows and vaudeville stages performed music from the golden days of steamer trunks, wicker chairs, potted palms and all-night soirees. 

A program at the WYO Theater will pay homage to those past forms of performance Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with the presentation of “Portable Masterpieces” by Trinkle Brass Works. 

The event will include an evening of ragtime, light classical and snappy radio tunes.

Tickets to the show cost $5.50 to $14.50 and are available through the WYO Theater box office, by phone at 672-9084 or online at wyotheater.com.
