Wright exhibit reception set for Tuesday @ Martinsen Gallery in the Whitney Building at Sheridan College

SHERIDAN — A free reception for the opening of the William E. “Bill” Wright Exhibit will take place Tuesday from 5-6:30 p.m.

The exhibit will hang in the Martinsen Gallery in the Whitney Building at Sheridan College through Nov. 28.

The show contains 36 pieces showcasing Wright’s wide range of mediums: conte’ crayon, oil, watercolor, pastel and pen and ink that represent landscapes, portraits, abstracts and still life creations.

The Martinsen Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., free of charge.

It will be closed Nov. 23-25 for Thanksgiving break.

Artists to show off work at ‘Jentel Presents’ @ Sagebrush Community Art Center

SHERIDAN — Jentel Foundation will present current artists in residence at the Sagebrush Community Art Center on Tuesday from 5:30-7 p.m.

The artists will give presentations about their art.

The event is free and open to the public.

Presenters for November include novelist Allegra Hyde, of Peterborough, New Hampshire; printmaker Jennifer Basile, of Miami, Florida; fiber artist Carolyn Riman, of Santa Fe, New Mexico; painter Carol Griffith, of Orient, Ohio; mixed media artist Jennifer Murray, of Brooklyn, New York; and fiction writer Joseph Langdon, of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Newton to present at Archaeological Society @ Holiday Inn

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan-Johnson County chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Sheridan Holiday Inn.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Dinner can be ordered from the menu but is not required to attend.

At 7 p.m., Cody Newton with SWCA Environmental Consultants will give a presentation regarding archaeological investigations and preliminary analysis of one of the “Camps of Instruction” recently located in north central Wyoming.

Reservations are not required to attend.

Sagebrush Art Center to host Retrospective show, reception @ Sagebrush Community Art Center

SHERIDAN — The Sagebrush Community Art Center will host a reception for its annual Retrospective Show on Nov. 17 from 5-7 p.m.

The show honors artists with long, productive careers in the Sheridan area.

The artists featured this year will be Nancie Furnish, Claire Leon and Connie Robinson.

Furnish is a second-generation glass artist. She moved to Cheyenne in 1971, where she opened her own studio and gallery. In 1992, she and her family moved to Sheridan. Her work has been mainly private and commercial work by commission.

Leon, a photographer, has lived in Story since 1959. Her serious interest in photography began with classes and Sheridan College in 1995. Leon is passionate about capturing the beauty of the landscape and flora in the Bighorn Mountain region.

Robinson is an oil painter and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1974. Initially, she produced artwork as a commercial illustrator. A painter of wildlife and the regional landscape, the great outdoors remains a dominating force in Robinson’s work.

The show will be on display through Dec. 30. The reception is open to the public and refreshments will be served.

SHERIDAN — The Dayton Art Loop and Bazaar will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will showcase artistic talent in the Tongue River Valley. Activities will include a tour of the studios of local artists and a bazaar.

SC to host reception for DeVuono art show Thursday @ Whitney Center for the Arts

SHERIDAN — Sheridan College will host a reception for Lanny DeVuono’s new show on display in the Whitney Center for the Arts. The reception will take place Thursday from 5-7 p.m.

The exhibition, “Outer Space,” comes to Sheridan from the Denver Contemporary Art Museum.

DeVuono uses landscape imagery as a metaphor to examine both the physical environment in which we live, as well as the social and psychological environments of our expectations.

In this series at Sheridan College, she is interested in the current privatization of space research, historical parallels with past explorations as well as the fast changing environments of the earth.

DeVuono is an associate professor at the University of Colorado Denver and has taught at Eastern Washington University, New York University, William Paterson University, Rangsit University in Thailand and Trivandrum College of Fine Art in India.

She also writes on contemporary art under the name Frances DeVuono.  

DeVuono’s work will be on display through Jan. 22.

Archaeological Society to meet Thursday @ Sheridan Holiday Inn

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan/Johnson County Chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society will have its monthly meeting Thursday at the Holiday Inn. 

Dinner starts at 6 p.m. with the speaker starting around 7 p.m. You do not have to attend the dinner to listen to the speaker.

Dave McKee with the Bighorn National Forest will present a program covering the history and management of the Medicine Wheel/ Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark. The Bighorn Medicine Wheel/Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark constitutes one of the most important and well-preserved Native American sacred sites in North America. The landmark’s archaeological remains, ancient trail system and traditional use areas relate to its primary function and significance as a spiritual and ceremonial place with use that continues to the present day. This past year marked the 20th anniversary of implementation of the Medicine Wheel Historic Preservation Plan which emphasizes education, preservation and continued ceremonial use.

McKee is the forest staff officer for recreation, lands, trails, wilderness and archaeology on the Bighorn National Forest. He received a master’s degree in anthropology with an emphasis in northwest plains archaeology from the University of Wyoming. He has worked as an archaeologist for the U.S. Forest Service for the past 28 years on the Medicine Bow, Black Hills and Bighorn National Forests.

SAGE to host 7th annual National Juried Art Show @ Sagebrush Community Art Center’s new space

SHERIDAN — Sheridan Artists Guild Et al will host its seventh annual National Juried Art Show in February and has put out a call for art to be featured in the show.

Heather Plank will serve as the juror for the first show in the guild’s new space downtown.

Plank has a bachelor’s degree in printmaking from the University of Oregon and established the residency program and gallery at the Ucross Foundation, among other accomplishments and training.

The show will open Feb. 2 and a reception and awards event will take place that day from 5-7 p.m. at the Sagebrush Community Art Center’s new space at 21 W. Brundage St.

All submissions for art are due Jan. 10. To submit work, see artinsheridan.com for information.

 
Archaeological Society to gather Thursday @ Sheridan Holiday Inn

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan/Johnson County Chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society will have its monthly meeting Thursday at the Sheridan Holiday Inn. 

Those planning to attend are asked to see the hostess at the restaurant for the meeting location, which is typically the Le Gourmet Room. Dinner will start at 6 p.m. with the speaker starting around 7 p.m. Attendees can either join for the dinner, speaker or both.

Dr. Staphan Peterson with the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument will present on archaeological research in Yellowstone National Park, including lessons learned on the human past within the park, results of recent investigations and where archaeology research is headed in the park and beyond.

Peterson leads the cultural and natural resources program at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, and was park archaeologist at Yellowstone National Park for four years. Peterson was responsible for archaeological research and stewardship for Yellowstone’s 2.2. million acres. He has a Ph.D. from Indiana University and has 18 years of experience in the archaeology of the prehistoric and historic periods in the Great Plains and the Midwest. 

He has also investigated pioneer sites in Minnesota, Lewis and Clark campsites in Montana, large prehistoric towns in Indiana and Illinois, and many others.

Brinton to display student art in February @ Brinton Museum

BIG HORN — The Brinton Museum will again partner with local elementary schools to present the second annual All-Schools Fifth-Grade Student Art Show, featuring original art by fifth-grade students from nine schools throughout Sheridan and Johnson counties. 

The student art show opens in the Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Building’s Jacomien Mars Reception Gallery on Thursday. A reception for the artists will take place Friday from 5:30-7:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public. 

Admission to the student art exhibit through Feb. 17 is free for students and teachers.

The All-Schools Fifth-Grade Student Art Show offers fifth-graders the unique opportunity to showcase their artistic talents in a professional, museum setting and share their classroom art projects with the public. 

“We are happy to again highlight art by young students in a special show at The Brinton Museum,” Museum Director Kenneth Schuster said in a press release. “This event gives students the chance to experience first-hand how a fine art museum functions as a valuable resource to the community, and that museums are a great place to see great art!” 

The All-Schools Fifth-Grade Student Art Show is available to guests through Feb. 17.

SC to host father, daughter art exhibit, reception @ Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College

SHERIDAN — Internationally-renowned artist Theodore Waddell, who has gifted the college his entire print collection, printing press and materials to Sheridan College, will give a presentation with his daughter, local artist Arin Waddell, on Feb. 16 from 5-7 p.m.  

Theodore Waddell most often paints freely-rendered range animals roaming the vast plains of eastern Montana. He is known for expressionist animal and landscape painting and sculpture. Waddell was born in Laurel, Montana, and studied at the Brooklyn Museum Art School; Eastern Montana College; and Wayne State University, Detroit (MFA, 1968). He taught at the University of Montana from 1968 to 1976 and has since been a full-time artist and rancher.  He has had more than 90 one-man exhibitions, including a major survey at the Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis. Waddell’s work has been singled out in reviews in the Washington Post and The New York Times, and was the subject of a Newsweek article. 

The Waddells will work with Sheridan area high school students on Feb. 15 and Sheridan College students on Feb. 16. 

On Feb. 16, from 5-7 p.m., the Whitney Center for the Arts will host an opening artist reception for Theodore Waddell and Arin Waddell. Both of their works will be on display in their latest exhibition: Waddell + Waddell. This reception is free and open to the public. The public is welcome to attend, view the works and meet the artists. 

Waddell + Waddell is on display through March 10.
