Eclipse speaker to present at SC @ Sheridan College
May 15 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

SHERIDAN — How far would you travel to see a total eclipse of the sun?

Tim Slater, the Wyoming Excellence in Higher Education Endowed Chair in Science Education at the University of Wyoming, has traveled into deeply rural Africa to catch a glimpse of the disappearing sun. In May, he will travel across Wyoming to visit schools, public libraries and community centers to build awareness, generate excitement and help children, parents, teachers and community leaders to prepare for the upcoming total eclipse of the sun.

Slater is scheduled to speak about the nature of eclipses in the Sheridan area Monday, including visiting with Sheridan High School students and teachers at 1:45 p.m., and giving a public talk from 6-7:30 p.m. at Sheridan College.

In his lectures, Slater describes how to safely observe the Aug. 21 eclipse of the sun and uses scientific digital visualization simulations to explain why scientists from all over the world are coming to Wyoming to observe this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Visible from much of Wyoming and known as the Great North American Solar Eclipse, this rarely visible sky event occurs midday Aug. 21.

For more information, call Slater at 307-314-9831 or email tslater@uwyo.edu.

Sheridan College is located at 3059 Coffeen Ave.

Build a better world @ Sheridan County libraries
Jun 27 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

SHERIDAN — Sheridan area children, teens and adults are invited to participate in “Build a Better World,” Sheridan County libraries’ 2017 building-themed summer reading program.

The library encourages summer reading for entertainment and because it is important for young readers to keep reading while on summer break from school in order to maintain their reading skills. Numerous studies show that students often significantly lose their reading skill level during the summer if they do not read regularly.

The summer reading program this year runs through July 27.

The children’s library will host weekly story times; programs and activities will be held in the children’s library, with special guests from the community attending the preschool story time each week.

A new program will also be offered this year for youth entering fifth grade and up. The sessions will be held on Tuesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. and will feature small building and crafting projects that participants can take home.

Adults and young adults wanting to participate in the summer reading program may pick up a punch card at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library circulation desk. For each book or other item checked out, the reader will receive one punch on the card. When the punches are complete on a card, the patron may choose a prize and start a new punch card.

The completed punch cards, with the name and phone number of the participants, are then entered into monthly drawings for larger prizes and for the grand finale prize at the end of the summer. The grand finale prize this year for adults and young adults will be $100 in Chamber Bucks.

The Story, Clearmont and Tongue River branch libraries are also holding summer reading programs with varying start dates and diverse program offerings. Contact the individual libraries for more details.
