SC to host presentation on fossil discovery @ Sheridan College
Mar 8 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College Museum of Discovery lecture series will feature a presentation titled “Grasslands to Well Pad — Fossil Discovery During Construction Monitoring” on March 8 at 7 p.m.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Paleontologists from SWCA Environmental Consultants conducted initial surveys for a proposed well pad development in eastern Wyoming. The survey area was nearly entirely vegetated, and it presented few bedrock exposures. Though sparse, observed fossils consisted of heavily weathered bone fragments. A year later a paleontologist was on site full time to monitor ground disturbing activities.

Initial discoveries included isolated skeletal elements from hadrosaur and ceratopsian dinosaurs and turtles. Then three closely associated bones were exposed in a channel sandstone horizon. An exploratory excavation revealed that the elements were really one specimen — a partially complete skull of cf. Triceratops horridus.

Because this project followed proper mitigation protocol, a new specimen of Triceratops and associated geographic and stratigraphic data will be available for study.

Georgia Knauss, who will give the presentation, is the paleontology lead at SWCA Environmental Consultants based in Sheridan; and works as a mitigation paleontologist.

Sheridan College is located at 3059 Coffeen Ave.

Big Horn High School students to perform ‘Godspell’ @ Big Horn High School
Mar 28 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

BIG HORN — Big Horn High School choir students will tell the stories of John the Baptist, Jesus and Judas when they present a production of “Godspell JR.” on March 28 at the school’s auditorium under the direction of music/drama director Dustin G. Olsen.

Conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, “Godspell” is one of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time. The musical uses major episodes in the Bible — including the baptism of Jesus, the Last Supper, his arrest and crucifixion — to explore important ideas like compassion, love, forgiveness and sacrifice for the greater good.

“There is a wonderful symmetry in this production,” Olsen said. “These students are working together as a team to present a musical, which at its core reminds us how our individual actions ‘day by day’ help us to build a beautiful community and world.

“We have chosen to bring the timeless musical ‘Godspell’ to today’s world,” he continued. “This production is set inside a present day classroom with Jesus being the teacher. As with the original ‘Godspell’ production, the audience is part of the cast in our production as well. Together we will celebrate the teachings and life of Jesus.”

The Big Horn High School choir will present the production March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Big Horn auditorium. Tickets are free, but donations will be accepted.

Big Horn High School is located at 333 Highway 335 in Big Horn.

Lecture to focus on genomics revolution @ Sheridan College Science Museum/Mohns Center.
Apr 5 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

SHERIDAN — Vikram Chhatre will give a lecture on “The Genomics Revolution” on Wednesday, April 5, at 7 p.m. at the Sheridan College Science Museum/Mohns Center.

The discovery of polymerase chain reaction ushered in a new era of biological research by instantly providing tools to study organisms at unprecedented depths. In the ensuing decades, the advent of affordable and high throughput DNA sequencing technology has revolutionized a large number of biological disciplines.

This genomic revolution aided by informatics tools has impacted our lives in a multitude of ways. Chhatre will discuss examples of the application of various genomic technologies in medicine, mitigation of global climate change, understanding organismal evolution and designing strategies for ecosystem conservation.

Chhatre grew up in India fascinated by the natural world and with a curiosity to understand what makes it work. Eventually narrowing down his focus to long-living forest trees, he adopted population genomics and bioinformatics tools to understand how they adapt to their environment.

The event is free and open to the public.
