Calmus to perform at SC @ Sheridan Collegeq
Apr 26 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

SHERIDAN — The Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College will present the Calmus Vocal Ensemble on April 26 at 7:30 p.m.

This renowned a cappella quintet presents “All the World’s a Stage,” a program of music inspired by the plays and poetry of the immortal bard, William Shakespeare. You will hear songs — all in English — by composers from all over the world ranging across five centuries to commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death that should please literary and music enthusiasts alike.

Excerpts from “Twelfth Night,” “Cymbeline,” “Othello” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be interspersed with settings of the sonnets. The concert will conclude with four distinct versions of the poem “Full Fathom Five” from “The Tempest.”

Composers covered will include 16th century Englishmen Orlando Gibbons and Henry Purcell to contemporary artists like Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Tavener, Nancy Wertsch, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi and others.

The Calmus Ensemble’s five performers are from the renowned St. Thomas Church Choir School and combine a pure female soprano voice with four male voices ranging from bass to countertenor.

Tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for students. They are available through the WYO Theater or at the door. Information on this concert and all other Whitney Center for the Arts events can be found at www.whitneyarts.org.
