Trail maintenance in the wilderness

SHERIDAN — For the next event in a series of outings celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the 30th anniversary of the Wyoming Wilderness Act of 1984, the Wyoming Wilderness Association will host a hike up Crystal Creek in the Gros Ventre Wilderness on July 24 to view nature at work. This includes an interpretive hike with Tim Farris as he explains backcountry trail maintenance. Hikers will learn how the Forest Service manages challenges in its trail maintenance program. Farmer’s Market with Mick Johnson Acoustic @ Grinnell Plaza

SHERIDAN — The annual Sheridan Farmers Market will commence Thursday at Grinnell Plaza. From 5-7 p.m. weekly on Thursdays vendors will sell produce, arts and crafts and more as live music, children’s activities, demonstrations and nonprofit booths are hosted. Attendance is free for customers and vendor booths are available to rent. This week features Mick Johnson Acoustic and youth activities. SCSD 2 final Kindergarten screening

SHERIDAN— Sheridan County School District 2 is holding a second opportunity for Kindergarten screening. All Kindergarten parents are urged to have their child attend this screening if they did not do so in April. Appointments can be made by calling 674-7405, extension 5105 no later than August 8. You can register your child for Kindergarten is Sheridan School District 2 at the screening. Parents and guardians need to bring a birth certificate and immunization records to the registration. Children must be five-years-old on or before September 15, 2014 to be eligible for Kindergarten this fall. For more information call Scott Stults at 647-7405, extension 5108.

Learn about forest service policies at ‘Wyoming Wednesday’ @ Wyoming Welcome Center

SHERIDAN — The Wyoming Office of Tourism will host the next event in a series of events called “Wyoming Wednesdays.” Informative and interpretive programs about Sheridan are being offered at 10 a.m. most Wednesdays throughout July at the Wyoming Welcome Center. At this week’s event, Cheri Jones of the United States Forest Service will talk about forest service policies and will focus on the Big Horn National Forest. The events are free and open to everyone. Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic lunches and stay and enjoy the visitor’s center before or after each program. The center is located off of Interstate 90 on the Fifth Street exit. Lecture at the Brinton Museum @ Brinton Museum

BIG HORN— The Brinton Museum will have a lecture Wednesday at 10 a.m. Hosted by assistant curator Jessie Landau on Bradford Brinton and the Early 20th Century Cult of Masculinity. Wacky Science @ Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library

SHERIDAN — Join Sarah Mentock of Science kids July 30 for “Wacky Science.” Children ages 10-16 are invited to learn cool scientific principles using everyday materials. Following the science activities, participants will have a pizza party. Both events are free. The event will begin at 11 a.m. in the Inner Circle at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library.

Women’s Retreat @ First Presbyterian Church

SHERIDAN— The First Presbyterian Church will host a women’s retreat from August 8 through August 10. Open to all women in the community, the retreat will be held at Camp Story. Dr. Anita Schamber, Christian life coach, is the guest speaker for the retreat. Those who would like to attend should pick u pa registration form at the church and return it before August 1. 3-D Archery Shoot

SHERIDAN— The Sheridan County Sportsmans Association will hold a 3-D archery shoot Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m.  The family friendly event will be at Bear Lodge and costs $10 per shooter. If you want to shoot for competition, the cost is $20. There will be food and drinks available. The lodge is located at 5600 U.S. 14 in Dayton. Grizzly bear ecology tour

SHERIDAN — For the next event in a series of outings celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the 30th anniversary of the Wyoming Wilderness Act of 1984, the Wyoming Wilderness Association will host a Grizzly Bear ecology tour in the Shoshone National Forest. On Saturday, Chuck Neal, a retired U.S. Department of the Interior ecologist, will lead the group into grizzly bear country and teach the ecology and biology of the bears. Bring a picnic lunch and spend time discussing the anniversary of wilderness areas. The walk will be approximately 5 miles roundtrip, and is a steep uphill climb.
