TIPS training to be offered May 5 @ Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce

SHERIDAN — TIPS training will be offered May 5 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce training room.

TIPS — Training for Intervention ProcedureS — is the global leader in education and training for the responsible service, sale and consumption of alcohol. It is a skills-based training program that is designed to prevent intoxication, underage drinking and drunken driving.

Officer Jim Arzy of the Sheridan Police Department will provide the training.

There is no charge to attend, but advanced registration by April 26 is required. Register by calling the Chamber at 672-2485 or email info@sheridanwyomingchamber.org.

The Chamber is located at 171 N. Main St.

City organizing community clean-up day @ Sheridan City Landfill
May 6 all-day

SHERIDAN — The city of Sheridan will host the first community clean-up day in conjunction with its longtime Trees for Trash event at the landfill.

The events are slated for May 6 and are designed to bring the community together to keep Sheridan beautiful.

Volunteer groups will be dispatched to specific open spaces in Sheridan to help clean up. In addition, the city will plant up to 20 ornamental trees in recognition of the new effort.

The city will provide all clean-up day volunteers all tools necessary to participate.

Individuals and groups may sign up by April 30 by contacting Darla Franklin at the city landfill, dfranklin@sheridanwy.net or 674-8461.

Readings of ‘Black Lives in Plays’ planned
May 6 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

SHERIDAN — Big Horn resident Grace Cannon will host a series of play readings at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library over the next three Saturdays.

The series, called Black Lives in Plays, will take place in the Inner Circle at the library from 1-4 p.m. each Saturday through May 13.

The purpose of the series is to provide an opportunity for community members to become more acquainted with classic and new American plays.

The series will include plays written by African-American playwrights and one written in documentary style about the history of public housing in Chicago.

The readings are free and open to the public.

Those planning to attend will be encouraged to participate, though no preparation is required. Each Saturday, the play will be read by those who are present and a discussion will follow.

The schedule is as follows:

• April 29 — “Fences” by August Wilson

• May 6 — “The America Play” by Suzan Lori-Parks

• May 13 — “The Project(s)” by PJ Paparelli and Joshua Jaeger

SHERIDAN — Back pain plagues many people, from simple muscle pangs and posture-related soreness to more serious discomfort from injury. The YMCA Healthy Back program was designed by medical professionals to help individuals strengthen their backs.

The Healthy Back class is preventative in nature, and consists of relaxation, stretching and gentle muscle strengthening exercises. Program participants will gradually learn a sequence of 15 simple, but effective exercises that can be done daily at home.

The Healthy Back class is free to all members of the community and the class is limited to 15 participants. Interested individuals must sign up by calling the YMCA at 674-7488.

The class will take place from 12:15-1:15 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday from May 1-17.

The YMCA is located at 417 N. Jefferson St.

Local libraries to host book discussions through spring @ Fulmer Library
May 9 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

SHERIDAN — The annual Claire Yorks Spring Book Discussion Series will begin in January at Sheridan County libraries. Story Branch and Tongue River Branch libraries will offer the series “Immigration: On Becoming an American” and Sheridan Fulmer Library will offer “Growing Up in the West.” 

Katie Curtiss will lead discussions at Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library and Norleen Healy will lead at Story and Tongue River branches.

Story Branch Library and Tongue River Branch Library will start their discussions in January and Sheridan Fulmer will start its discussions in February. Books are available now at the front desk of each library.

Participants can attend any or all sessions and can also attend sessions at different libraries if they choose. There is no charge for these programs and new participants are welcome.

• Feb. 14 – “English Creek” at 6:30 p.m.

• March 14 – “The Meadow” at 6:30 p.m.

The Claire Yorks Reading and Discussion series is funded by an endowment established at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library. Yorks was born in Sheridan to Leroy and Mildred Calkins.

She graduated from high school in Sheridan and moved to Seattle to work in the aircraft industry in World War II. There she met and married her husband, Samuel Yorks.

She finished college and became a social worker in Portland.

When she retired in 1982, the Yorks moved to Sheridan where they were involved community volunteers. Sam Yorks was the first moderator of adult reading and discussion groups at the Fulmer Library in Sheridan.

Wuerker to host oil painting classes @ SAGE Community Arts

SHERIDAN — Local artist Jenny Wuerker will host a series of oil painting classes each Wednesday between March 15 and May 24.

The hands-on painting class will help attendees improve their skills, discover new techniques and learn to paint directly from observation.

All levels are welcome to attend the class, which costs $150 for SAGE Community Arts members and $175 for nonmembers.

Museum to host gala with former governors @ Sheridan Holiday Inn.
May 13 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Historical Society and Museum has started selling tickets for its annual gala fundraiser. 

The fundraiser, “A View From the Governor’s Mansion,” will take place May 13 at the Sheridan Holiday Inn. 

The program for the evening will feature three former Wyoming governors — Michael Sullivan, James Geringer and David Freduenthal.

The trio will share a little history and their perspective as Wyoming’s chief executive. 

Tickets for the gala are $75 per person and will go on sale March 1 through the WYO Theater box office and the Sheridan County Historical Society and Museum mercantile gift shop.

The gala will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and silent auction. Dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m.

After dinner will be the program by the former governors. All of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Sheridan County Historical Society and Museum.

YMCA to offer class for healthy backs @ YMCA

SHERIDAN — Back pain plagues many people, from simple muscle pangs and posture-related soreness to more serious discomfort from injury. The YMCA Healthy Back program was designed by medical professionals to help individuals strengthen their backs.

The Healthy Back class is preventative in nature, and consists of relaxation, stretching and gentle muscle strengthening exercises. Program participants will gradually learn a sequence of 15 simple, but effective exercises that can be done daily at home.

The Healthy Back class is free to all members of the community and the class is limited to 15 participants. Interested individuals must sign up by calling the YMCA at 674-7488.

The class will take place from 12:15-1:15 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday from May 1-17.

Local libraries to host book discussions through spring @ Fulmer Library
May 9 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

SHERIDAN — The annual Claire Yorks Spring Book Discussion Series will begin in January at Sheridan County libraries. Story Branch and Tongue River Branch libraries will offer the series “Immigration: On Becoming an American” and Sheridan Fulmer Library will offer “Growing Up in the West.” 

Katie Curtiss will lead discussions at Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library and Norleen Healy will lead at Story and Tongue River branches.

Story Branch Library and Tongue River Branch Library will start their discussions in January and Sheridan Fulmer will start its discussions in February. Books are available now at the front desk of each library.

Participants can attend any or all sessions and can also attend sessions at different libraries if they choose. There is no charge for these programs and new participants are welcome.

The Claire Yorks Reading and Discussion series is funded by an endowment established at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library. Yorks was born in Sheridan to Leroy and Mildred Calkins.

She graduated from high school in Sheridan and moved to Seattle to work in the aircraft industry in World War II. There she met and married her husband, Samuel Yorks.

She finished college and became a social worker in Portland.

When she retired in 1982, the Yorks moved to Sheridan where they were involved community volunteers. Sam Yorks was the first moderator of adult reading and discussion groups at the Fulmer Library in Sheridan.

SHERIDAN — Local artist Jenny Wuerker will host a series of oil painting classes each Wednesday between March 15 and May 24.

The hands-on painting class will help attendees improve their skills, discover new techniques and learn to paint directly from observation.

All levels are welcome to attend the class, which costs $150 for SAGE Community Arts members and $175 for nonmembers.

Readings of ‘Black Lives in Plays’ planned
May 13 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

SHERIDAN — Big Horn resident Grace Cannon will host a series of play readings at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library over the next three Saturdays.

The series, called Black Lives in Plays, will take place in the Inner Circle at the library from 1-4 p.m. each Saturday through May 13.

The purpose of the series is to provide an opportunity for community members to become more acquainted with classic and new American plays.

The series will include plays written by African-American playwrights and one written in documentary style about the history of public housing in Chicago.

The readings are free and open to the public.

Those planning to attend will be encouraged to participate, though no preparation is required. Each Saturday, the play will be read by those who are present and a discussion will follow.

The schedule is as follows:

• April 29 — “Fences” by August Wilson

• May 6 — “The America Play” by Suzan Lori-Parks

• May 13 — “The Project(s)” by PJ Paparelli and Joshua Jaeger

Museum to host gala with former governors @ Sheridan Holiday Inn.

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Historical Society and Museum has started selling tickets for its annual gala fundraiser. 

The fundraiser, “A View From the Governor’s Mansion,” will take place May 13 at the Sheridan Holiday Inn. 

The program for the evening will feature three former Wyoming governors — Michael Sullivan, James Geringer and David Freduenthal.

The trio will share a little history and their perspective as Wyoming’s chief executive. 

Tickets for the gala are $75 per person and will go on sale March 1 through the WYO Theater box office and the Sheridan County Historical Society and Museum mercantile gift shop.

The gala will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and silent auction. Dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m.

After dinner will be the program by the former governors. All of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Sheridan County Historical Society and Museum.
