SHERIDAN — The Bighorn Forest Collaborative meeting will take place on Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sheridan County Court House in room 210.

The citizen-driven collaborative group was established to make recommendations to Wyoming Governor Matt Mead on roadless area management on the Bighorn National Forest.

The purpose of the meeting is to resolve roadless area management issues on the Bighorn National Forest. The discussion will focus on how to maintain roadless areas and their associated benefits, while providing an appropriate level of management tools for wildlife, wildland-urban interface area and municipal watersheds.

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Veterans Affairs Health Care System will host a community forum Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. in the auditorium located at its the campus in Sheridan.

Organizers have invited all veterans and those who care for and advocate for veterans in Sheridan and Johnson counties to the event.

Warren Hill, the interim medical center director, will provide a brief update on the Sheridan VAHCS and take questions from those in attendance.

Representatives from the Veterans Benefits Administration, Suicide Prevention Program, Transitional Care Management Program, Patient Education, Enrollment/Eligibility Office, Patient Advocate, Human Resources and the VA Choice Program will also be available to answer questions from attendees.

Archaeological Society to meet Thursday @ Sheridan Holiday Inn

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan/Johnson County Chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society will have its monthly meeting Thursday at the Holiday Inn. 

Dinner starts at 6 p.m. with the speaker starting around 7 p.m. You do not have to attend the dinner to listen to the speaker.

Dave McKee with the Bighorn National Forest will present a program covering the history and management of the Medicine Wheel/ Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark. The Bighorn Medicine Wheel/Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark constitutes one of the most important and well-preserved Native American sacred sites in North America. The landmark’s archaeological remains, ancient trail system and traditional use areas relate to its primary function and significance as a spiritual and ceremonial place with use that continues to the present day. This past year marked the 20th anniversary of implementation of the Medicine Wheel Historic Preservation Plan which emphasizes education, preservation and continued ceremonial use.

McKee is the forest staff officer for recreation, lands, trails, wilderness and archaeology on the Bighorn National Forest. He received a master’s degree in anthropology with an emphasis in northwest plains archaeology from the University of Wyoming. He has worked as an archaeologist for the U.S. Forest Service for the past 28 years on the Medicine Bow, Black Hills and Bighorn National Forests.

Archaeological Society to gather Thursday @ Sheridan Holiday Inn

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan/Johnson County Chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society will have its monthly meeting Thursday at the Sheridan Holiday Inn. 

Those planning to attend are asked to see the hostess at the restaurant for the meeting location, which is typically the Le Gourmet Room. Dinner will start at 6 p.m. with the speaker starting around 7 p.m. Attendees can either join for the dinner, speaker or both.

Dr. Staphan Peterson with the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument will present on archaeological research in Yellowstone National Park, including lessons learned on the human past within the park, results of recent investigations and where archaeology research is headed in the park and beyond.

Peterson leads the cultural and natural resources program at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, and was park archaeologist at Yellowstone National Park for four years. Peterson was responsible for archaeological research and stewardship for Yellowstone’s 2.2. million acres. He has a Ph.D. from Indiana University and has 18 years of experience in the archaeology of the prehistoric and historic periods in the Great Plains and the Midwest. 

He has also investigated pioneer sites in Minnesota, Lewis and Clark campsites in Montana, large prehistoric towns in Indiana and Illinois, and many others.

SHERIDAN — The University of Wyoming Trustees Education Initiative invites Wyomingites to participate in a series of town-hall meetings to gather stakeholder perspectives on the UW College of Education and its educator preparation programs in service of Wyoming’s preschool through high school students.

Students, parents, guardians, teachers, principals, superintendents, elected officials (including school board members), the business community and all community members are encouraged to attend. 

Meetings are planned for Sheridan, Jackson, Casper, Gillette, Torrington, Riverton, Powell, Cheyenne, Rock Springs and Evanston.

The Sheridan meeting will take place Friday from 3-4:30 p.m. at Sheridan College in the Whitney Academic Center room 153. Sheridan college is located at 3059 Coffeen Ave.

The TEI was established by the UW Board of Trustees in fall 2014 to “elevate the UW College of Education to national pre-eminent status in professional educator preparation, ultimately to improve and enhance K-12 education in Wyoming.”

The TEI Governing Board will receive recommendations from a TEI National Advisory Board and workgroups composed of Wyoming students, parents, educators, school leaders, state officials and university faculty.

Archaeological Society to meet Thursday @ Sheridan Holiday Inn

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan/Johnson County Chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society will have its monthly meeting Thursday at the Holiday Inn. 

Dinner starts at 6 p.m. with the speaker starting around 7 p.m. You do not have to attend the dinner to listen to the speaker.

Dave McKee with the Bighorn National Forest will present a program covering the history and management of the Medicine Wheel/ Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark. The Bighorn Medicine Wheel/Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark constitutes one of the most important and well-preserved Native American sacred sites in North America. The landmark’s archaeological remains, ancient trail system and traditional use areas relate to its primary function and significance as a spiritual and ceremonial place with use that continues to the present day. This past year marked the 20th anniversary of implementation of the Medicine Wheel Historic Preservation Plan which emphasizes education, preservation and continued ceremonial use.

McKee is the forest staff officer for recreation, lands, trails, wilderness and archaeology on the Bighorn National Forest. He received a master’s degree in anthropology with an emphasis in northwest plains archaeology from the University of Wyoming. He has worked as an archaeologist for the U.S. Forest Service for the past 28 years on the Medicine Bow, Black Hills and Bighorn National Forests.

Chamber to host monthly luncheon @ Best Western Sheridan Center

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce will host its monthly luncheon Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Best Western Sheridan Center.

The event features a buffet lunch, followed by a brief business meeting and featured program.

The event is open to the public. The cost for lunch is $15 per person.

Polka Club to gather Sun. @ Elks Lodge

SHERIDAN — The Big Horn Mountain Polka Club will hold a dance Sunday at the Sheridan Elks Lodge #520.

The dance will be from 1-5 p.m. with music by Midnight Special.

All are welcome. The event will include polka, waltzes, two-steps and many more dances.

BIG HORN — The January meeting for the Big Horn Woman’s Club will take place Friday at 1:30 p.m. 

The program will focus on the recycling program in Sheridan.

BHCHS to meet Sunday @ Big Horn Woman’s Club

BIG HORN — The Big Horn City Historical Society will gather Sunday at 1 p.m. for its monthly meeting.

The event will include a potluck lunch at 1 p.m. and the program to follow.

Kim Fuka will present this month’s program, which will focus on the life and experiences of Jim Bridger.

The event will take place at the Big Horn Woman’s Club, located at 314 S. Second St. in Big Horn.

Archaeological Society to gather Thursday @ Sheridan Holiday Inn

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan/Johnson County Chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society will have its monthly meeting Thursday at the Sheridan Holiday Inn. 

Those planning to attend are asked to see the hostess at the restaurant for the meeting location, which is typically the Le Gourmet Room. Dinner will start at 6 p.m. with the speaker starting around 7 p.m. Attendees can either join for the dinner, speaker or both.

Dr. Staphan Peterson with the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument will present on archaeological research in Yellowstone National Park, including lessons learned on the human past within the park, results of recent investigations and where archaeology research is headed in the park and beyond.

Peterson leads the cultural and natural resources program at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, and was park archaeologist at Yellowstone National Park for four years. Peterson was responsible for archaeological research and stewardship for Yellowstone’s 2.2. million acres. He has a Ph.D. from Indiana University and has 18 years of experience in the archaeology of the prehistoric and historic periods in the Great Plains and the Midwest. 

He has also investigated pioneer sites in Minnesota, Lewis and Clark campsites in Montana, large prehistoric towns in Indiana and Illinois, and many others.

Akcita Win to gather Tuesday @ Country Kitchen

SHERIDAN — Akcita Win will hold its February meeting on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Country Kitchen in Sheridan.  

The group’s guest speaker is Kay Wallick and she will talk about a “Dementia Friendly Community.” 

All are welcome to attend the meeting, however reservations are required and need to be called in to President Connie Goodwin at 751-2550.

Chamber to celebrate business community at monthly luncheon @ Best Western Sheridan Center

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce will recognize leaders in the local business community at its monthly luncheon Wednesday.

The lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Best Western Sheridan Center and will include awards for the Spirit of Sheridan, Strength of Sheridan and Businessperson of the Year, among others.

The cost for lunch is $17 per person. Or, those wishing to buy a punch card for 12 or 24 luncheons can do so at the previous price of $15 per lunch.

UW conducting town-hall meetings on educator preparation @ Sheridan College in the Whitney Academic Center room 153

SHERIDAN — The University of Wyoming Trustees Education Initiative invites Wyomingites to participate in a series of town-hall meetings to gather stakeholder perspectives on the UW College of Education and its educator preparation programs in service of Wyoming’s preschool through high school students.

Students, parents, guardians, teachers, principals, superintendents, elected officials (including school board members), the business community and all community members are encouraged to attend. 

Meetings are planned for Sheridan, Jackson, Casper, Gillette, Torrington, Riverton, Powell, Cheyenne, Rock Springs and Evanston.

The Sheridan meeting will take place Friday from 3-4:30 p.m. at Sheridan College in the Whitney Academic Center room 153. Sheridan college is located at 3059 Coffeen Ave.

The TEI was established by the UW Board of Trustees in fall 2014 to “elevate the UW College of Education to national pre-eminent status in professional educator preparation, ultimately to improve and enhance K-12 education in Wyoming.”

The TEI Governing Board will receive recommendations from a TEI National Advisory Board and workgroups composed of Wyoming students, parents, educators, school leaders, state officials and university faculty.

Cottonwood Properties to host Business After Hours @ Cottonwood Properties

SHERIDAN — Cottonwood Properties will host this month’s Business After Hours event at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The monthly social and networking event is organized by the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce.

This month, a drawing will be held for gift baskets from Ginger Salon, LLC; First Federal Bank and Trust; Tire Rama; and Cottonwood Properties, LLC. The event will also include refreshments and snacks. Cottonwood Properties is located at 205 Coffeen Ave.
